Getting adventurous on a strange menu

in #getyerlearnon6 years ago

I like trying new food items. I always say that "I'll try anything once as long as needles aren't involved." When I opened up the menu at the Ziggy Stardust Restaurant in Koh Phayam and saw this prominently featured on the top of a page, I was immediately intrigued.

The name of the menu item in Thai is also "no name" and there is no additional description as to what this might be. There was also no photo of the food. Since it was only 80 Baht (around $2.50) myself and my pal figured "what the hell?" and decided to give it a go. We could have asked the staff what it is but I wanted to dive in head first and just take it as it came.

about 5 minutes later this was delivered to our table.

It was obvious that it was deep fried something with some sort of batter to hold the concoction together. It came with a side of sweet chili sauce which isn't surprising since nearly every appetizer in Thailand is served with that.

The best I can tell is that is that there cabbage, carrots, and some sort of green stuff in there that I think might be spring onions. It basically just tasted like a vegetable tempura where everything was mixed into one fritter instead of eating them separately.

I can't really say that this dish blew my mind because well, it just tasted like fried whatever. The batter taste overpowered the taste of anything that is in it. If you really like tempura or onion rings this could be something you might enjoy. Mostly I found it to be a bit "meh" but I suppose I am glad that I tried if for no other reason than to eliminate the mystery around that menu item.

I reckon i should go get in the ocean to work of some of this fried bits. It is overcast today so there is very little chance of sunburn.... or is there?

are you being serious? I can't find any record of this on the interwebs but i'll take your word for it I guess. The Thai spelling is still "name". If nah-meh is a thing then I guess I know what that is now. :)

Hahaha!! You are so very nice and good hearted!!
I am just kidding! I was testing whether you would take this bait or not!! But you are too polite to just yell out in disbelief! LoL

Thank you so much! You really cheer me up today!!
Very good karma on your part!
By the way, I am a bit psychic! So, I could do doggo sitting for you one day if I found myself in Chiengmai.

Have a very nice Songkran! My friend!!
Hahaha! Nah-meh!!
You just give it a new name.

Cheers.

Wow, that's interesting! It's funny that the menu has something called "no name". I think it's a trick of the place to attract the attention of customers, they took the prize to the most ingenious. And how much courage yours to try things without names jajajaja I could not

My my! Looks a bit as if it's gonna be crunchy really, but I definitely think it's got onions, cabbages and egg, and why is the sauce totally plain? No meat or vegetable like as in soup? Wow 2.50$ that's not bad at all, I guess once in a while this kinda food goes.

Thank you for this post. A really interesting experiance indeed.

That's too bad that the batter overpowered everything else. I have been in that situation a lot of times where you want to like it but you just can't do it. I had some perch like that a while ago where I had them fry it in a beer batter as opposed to a regular batter. It was just too much. Especially for something as small as perch. I love that sweet chili sauce though.

I'd have eaten it out of here curiosity too even if it looked like boiled wood
