The acting is good in this movie don't get me wrong. However, if there was ever a more obvious plot line to take advantage of people who were missing father figures in their life, I can't think of one greater than this.
The Plot without totally ruining the story (which I am sure you could guess anyway:) Some kids who are reasonably well behaved stumble upon fugitive Matthew McNametoodifficulttospell on an island one day while doing innocent teenager kid stuff. He seems like a nice enough guy and not terribly rapey. His name is presented just as "Mud," and Mud asks them to help him with getting him some food and helping him make his boat (which is stuck in a tree somehow that isn't explained) ready to sail again but to do so with absolute secrecy.
I'm being overly silly despite the fact that I thought the film was actually reasonably good. I just find it a bit annoying when they always try to insert some guy who is accused of a crime that we aren't really given the circumstances of very clearly but it turns out that he is really nice to young kids for some reason. This was done to great fan-fare in a film called "A Perfect World" and probably many times before. However, whenever i see it, i tend to think that the plot is a bit tired and well, "fishing for critical review" in lieu of having an actual inventive story.
I applaud Matthew McConaughey for being in this film and his acting is the 2nd best of anyone in this film. The gold medal goes to Tye Sheridan, who play the role of Ellis (one of the 14 year old's who "discovers" Mud on his island.) I give him the top prize because his performance is flawless, including showing just the right amount of emotion but not going too over the top in situations that someone as old as he is (the actor, not the person he is portraying) can possibly be familiar with. He executes these scenarios perfectly.
Reese Witherspoon was super-hot in this movie and her involvement was a little bit hokey in that McLongStrangelySpelled just happens to be stashed away on a nearby island while she is searching for herself as a person nearby despite the fact that she doesn't live there. Of course "Mud" happens to be desperately in love with her as well. Where people were and when was far too convenient and rom-commy for me. Just because we introduce a tiny bit of action and drama doesn't really change this "eye rolling moment" for me.... if that makes sense to you.
McConaughey was ok in this, but not great. He was just himself without the comedy. There was nothing else particularly special about his performance. I am not saying he is not a great actor because he is. I love him in Dallas Buyers' Club, but this movie just isn't special. That might have a lot to do with the script rather than the man.
If you didn't think the movie was corny I apologize. But i thought it was. Tye Sheridan was incredible in it and I certainly hope he went on to do other greater things because he certainly has what it takes to do so.
I went into "Mud" with no idea of what it was about. I immediately had flashbacks to "Stand By Me". That said, I think "Mud" is a better movie. I thought the acting was exceptional, the photography both real and lush, the lighting well done, and the story was fresh, real, and terrific. The direction MUST have been terrific also, as the result is a near-perfect film that everyone can and should enjoy.
The 2 young actors (playing the characters of Ellis and Neckbone) were amazing -- especially Tye Sheridan playing the lead character, Ellis. Sam Shepherd was great as Ellis' "assassin" neighbor (and longtime friend of Mud), the actor who played Ellis' dad was TERRIFIC and stole every scene he was in. Reese Witherspoon was only on film for perhaps 10 minutes but she was perfect as Mud's white-trash girlfriend. And this was Matthew McConaughey's best job EVER. (Until now only his role in The Lincoln Lawyer was good to my mind, and I was tired of his constant good-old-pretty-boy act in everything else
From the first minutes, we are shown ordinary rural boys, with their usual, gray life. Everything changes after the meeting with McConaughey.
I agree with your assessment, unfortunately, there are more shortcomings in the picture than advantages.
First, the lack of motivation of the characters. Two guys meet an unknown man on an island in the middle of the Mississippi. What will ordinary boys do in this situation? Maybe they will just leave the island and forget about the mysterious stranger? Maybe he's a pedophile or a rapist? No, real people laugh their fears in the face and take food to an unknown tramp on the island.
Second, the main character. He's a real 14-year-old terminator here. He easily beats up high school students and suffers blows from 30-year-old men, getting off with just a black eye.
Third, girl Mud. She's acting like the last prostitute. She's cheating on Mud not only the night she was supposed to be taken to the island, but also, according to Tom's stories, before that.
Fourth, final. No final shootout. One gets the feeling that McConaughey is at war with the stormtroopers or just dummies. They do not see the focus when he throws the weapon right next to his shelter, and continue to shoot at the chair.
There are few advantages.
First, McConaughey. He literally drags the film on his charisma. Great game. If you are a fan of this actor, the film is worth watching.
Second, the camera work and scenery. Filmed at a high level. The picture is pleasant, the scenery of Mississippi is fascinating.
My father is still alive, but when I saw this movie MUD (2013), I got that strange feeling. Maybe Matthew McConaughey performance is not top class in this movie, but it's not below average @gooddream
Don't need to be worried at all. Your way of expressing something is really appreciated. As always good contents deserve it. People always like good stuff like this.

I did not see the movie, it seems to be a good movie
MUD" well the story is not much good really. I will be straight forward. McNaughey s role on the island was interesting. I also liked sheridan(playing Ellis) because of his acting at an immature age. The plot line, i didnt get it much. Thanks for sharing. I don t think its really worth watching. Mind not but i didnt like it.
The movie seems to be good, I will try to spare out some time to watch it this weekend. moreover I am looking forward for your contest. when are you planning to conduct one?
