Ever since I first played Sim City back in the day when it consisted of just rectangles and very little in the way of animation of any sort, I have been a fan of construction / management simulation games. Tropico 5 was recommended by a friend and I am really happy he did because I probably would never have heard of it otherwise.

In this game you start out with pushcarts and lack of electricity, building farms and mines and eventually even nuclear power as the timeline proceeds. You are a dictator on a tropical island and can choose to rule with an iron fist or to have democracy. It is important no matter which path you take to keep your population either happy or in fear else you will lose the game.
It is important to manage where you put housing because if it is too close to factories, farms, or other undesirable places, people aren't going to want to live there for the most part... you know.... just like in real life. It's tricky actually, because you need to provide places to work and places to live but if you place them too far apart or too close together, it isn't going to work.
Trade with other nations is absolutely essential in order to raise money for new projects, this can be difficult at times and other times it seems as though the money is just flying in. Remember to build as many ports as you feel you can support because this, for the most part, is the only source of revenue other than taxation. Taxation, of course, makes a population upset and we don't want that!
You will need to either develop a strong military or cater to the demands of other nations as well as rebels that exist on your own island. Unfortunately the actual combat of this game is pretty crap and I suppose that is really the only thing I don't like about the game.
The game is extremely easy to pick up and there is a sandbox version of the game where there is no end to the game, it just carries on forever or until you get tired of it. One nice addition is also that the game features a multiplayer setting where you can play with up to 3 other people on the island. You can choose to work together or to go to war in an economic or actual war type sense. It's a lot of fun and can be as casual or as hardcore as you please.
I have intentionally not included pictures of the game because you need to see it in action to appreciate it.
this game is routinely as cheap as 10 or even 5 dollars on Steam and comes highly recommended by me.
If your on the fence about getting this game get it. It's after I've played all of the Tropico games (with the exception of 2 I believe which didn't come out on the PC for some reason..) What's cool about this game is:
1 Trade routes. - If you like to play sandbox the game is so much better. You run out of resources, and what's cool now is you can set up trade agreements at different prices to import/export. And in order to make good money and have your buildings function you will need to import.
2 Multiplayer adds a nice touch; it's not my #1 in a Tropico game, but it's a nice side thing to do when you want to goof around with other dictators. :)
3 The research trees are nice; they could be more detailed, but they are a nice addition.
4 Some of the buildings were NOT available in Tropico 4 without buying Tropico 4 modern times, yet they are in 5 such as modern apartments, offices, etc.
5 Your dynasty is just that. You eventually will have more rulers in your dynasty and you can level them up with enough $$$, and they have different skills..
6 There are a LOT of managers with different skills. You get them via people attending colleges. You can then assign them to buildings.
7 The islands are decent size, AND random maps can be generated just like in T4.
8 This game is selling much more than Tropico 4 did. Does it mean it's better? No, it means that you will have people to play with in multiplayer mode, and the game is pretty good. I liked 4, but like 5 more. The options in sandbox with trading after you've researched everything are nice.. I used to get bored in Tropico 4 in sandbox because once you have a lot of money it seemed pointless; this is not the case in Tropico 5 with resources running out and the need for trade. Two thumbs up. :)
I've never heard of this game before so it's good you opened my eyes to it. It was a good Idea for you include pictures an animations so we can see what the game actually looks like and what to expect. It looks Lively and full of action.
I think I will need to try my hand on the game in order for me to rehearse how to manage a country. Hahaha
I love these types of games and they are really addictive. The easiest thing you could say is to start, and later when you advance you have to deal with many factors such as the happiness of people and the economy.
My strategy has always been to place low taxes and a good salary, obviously with a good economy that supports that. Believe me that with that the inhabitants will be more than pleased! In questions of knowing how to position industries and residences is in two parts, one far from the other since no one likes to live near one. Like the basic services that are working perfectly.
One negative aspect that I find a lot of these games is that occasionally, improve a building or build them cost too much and make the game rather slow. In any other aspect... 10/10!
And in your quest to develop nuclear weapons you piss off the world powers. I played tropico 3 and i have played several order similar games like Democracy 2, sims as you said and there is this one based in Russia where you build up an opposition, cant really remember the name
i think it is great in visual too... nice preview. thank you
Mehn this game has a mind of its own. I feel it would be a very addictive game. Imagine a game that makes you have the kind of power you long for and do just whatever you want to do with it without physically causing any damage to humanitym i must say this is it.
Dope...
