With the disintegration of the family system and other effect of postmodernism, most children today do not have the opportunity that children had some decades ago.

You know, back then, children learned or imbibed from their homes, schools, youth camps, and neighborhood, social skills, civil, etiquette, and values. Also, the boy scouts and girl guides was prominent social clubs in school and civics was a subject taught in classrooms. Unfortunately, nowadays, even the atmosphere in some homes is negative and detrimental to a child's growth and character development. As nature abhors a vacuum, today, children pick the negative values from sources outside their homes, especially their peers, video games, and the media.
The only subjects taught in school nowadays are the subject that as least impact in Life, in schools today, children are taught Mathematics, English language, Arts, Social studies and science, why can't we be intentional in teaching them, civility, self-motivated and character?
It's very glaring that character is best caught than taught but the boy scout is a testimony that good character traits such as *honesty, responsibility, helpfulness, self-esteem, self-discipline and organisation are skills that can be taught and learned.
It's high time teachers start teaching students from compiled and inclusive, non-religious curriculum for character education and inner motivation, accompanying workbooks for grades school - middle and high school students.
I think schools should be encouraged to begin to devote at least one class period a week to intentionally focus on character education. The idea of character education itself sends a positive message to our kids.
Various topics that should be treated includes;
Dreams, Name-calling, Competition, Comparison, Networking, Intuition, Win-win situations, Goals, Teamwork, Motivation, Sexuality, Focus, Self-esteem, Anger management, Assertiveness, Failure, Hope, Decisions, Peer pressure, Time management, Relationships, Civility, Adventure, and Image
etc.
Topics like this should be recommended for middle school and high school students.

The teachers should make students engage in journal activities, discussion questions, virtue, and role-play activities. If this course is taken seriously, and they work on one chapter per week in a highly recommended motivational book, the teacher and the students will cover a whole range of themes that are important in a child's or teen's life. This offers a great opportunity to see a transformation in the lives of kids as well as their classroom interactions.
Fact:
An educational system that focuses only on the "Three Rs" -
reading
,riting
, andrithmetic
- commendable as it may be, will fail to educate vthe whole person.
That's why all teachers should be committed to promoting character education in schools. This is greater than it seems, and if this goal is accomplished I believe life will become a better place for the new generation coming.

My wife is a school social worker in an elementary school and she goes into every classroom once a week to cover character education and social/emotional topics with the students. Our district has placed a huge focus on the social and emotional well being of the students because many of them do not get that at home. They need to learn coping mechanisms to deal with the horrible situations that some of them go back to each night.
Definitely true, mosts kids go through a lot yet there seem to be nobody to help out. I think the school is the best place for kids to learn the proper etiquette, and temper management, because most parents do not have or create the time for their kids all in the name of caterin. Most parents here in Africa belives the best way to bring up their kids is by providing food and shelter for them.
Thanks to you and your wife for trying to set things right.
I understand that my reply is coming 11 months after, my apologies.
