DailyMastermind 48 | GIVEAWAY 5 SBD FOR THE BEST IDEA TO IMPROVE DTUBE

in #giveaway7 years ago (edited)

Honestly, I have been really surprised that lately I'm gaining some love from @dtube. My vlogs have been really mediocre in terms of rewards, however this past week some of my vlogs have hit a new high thanks to all of you. Since @dtube is a major contributor to this AND that this is currently the best platform on STEEM Blockchain imo, I too want to play my part and contribute to DTube in return. Here's a 5SBD giveaway from me, in return I need all of you to share with me below 1 idea on how can DTube improve their platform.

Steps To WIN 5 SBD:

  1. Upvote this vlog (minimum 0.01 SBD, amount does not determine your chances of winning)
  2. Comment 1 idea below on 'How can Dtube improve their platform?'

There some points where DTube could improve:

  • Better streaming quality, which involves improving cloud services since some videos stutter ( but I think it's pretty expensive)
  • A better algorithm to show you more related videos
  • More quality options for the video ( ATM there are only 2 options for me: 480p and source)

I agree with @fujiwara that "Better streaming" should be addressed, by my concern is more with "speed" than with "quality." My experience thus far is that @dtube is virtually UNUSABLE because of slow steaming/buffering problems, and I know many Steemians who agree.

Granted, my Internet connection is not fast, but other streaming services (Vimeo, Vevo, YouTube, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, etc.) seldom pose a problem for me. However, Dtube always loads slowly, on a consistent, predictable basis. As an example, a music video recently took 40 minutes to load ONE-minute of the 4-minute video, after which I gave up. Your video last night was buffering even more slowly, at a rate of one-second-of-video loading every one-minute-of-waiting.

I am aware that where I live (eastern US) has much slower Internet than Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, and many other places in the world. But if streaming cannot be improved so the site becomes usable for everyone, as is Vimeo/Vevo/Youtube/etc., what good is it?

@fujiwara you have a point in that it might be much more expensive to improve the streaming quality. Perhaps, @dtube has more important priorities right now compared to this (I am not sure myself). HD options would be great too since most users are accustomed to the HD video quality on Youtube, Twitch etc.

I believe that the related videos currently displayed on your DTube UI is dependent on the accounts that you've followed. Personally, I only see videos from users that I've followed but not because it's relevant to the video that I'm currently watching. If @dtube can build a system that displays relevant videos to the ones users are currently watching, this can help to create more exposure for dtubers whilst keeping users engaged on the platform for a longer duration.

I have a pretty beefy Internet connection where I live and I'm experiencing the same things, videos aren't watchable when selecting the source option as they stutter way too much.

@aaronmcheong

Here's my shot:

Mobile application for dtube. Will greatly improve user interaction and activity. Even if you are not uploading , you get to watch videos on the go.

I believe the team shpuld be working on faster streeming and better/faster uploads

UI for mobile

Wow, amazing! @dante31 yes mobile application on iOS and Android can really help to accelerate the growth of @dtube!

Social Media implementation.
Trust me, no other video platform does that. They offer the possibility to "share" or "copy links", but it's not the same. DTube is small and new, and the only support it has is through the Steemit community.
So what if we had the chance to securely log on with FB/IG/Twitter/YT accounts, and re-share videos through this tool. That would enable both DTubers and non-users to have a bridge to communicate/promote videos without having to use Ad services or so. I could just post a video on DTube, and get an automatic repost on my other linked platforms.

So you want to log onto your FB/IG/Twitter/YT accounts on DTube, and then when you upload a video on DTube it automatically shows up on your other social media accounts like how it shows up on your Steemit blog? @reddutopia

Yeah something like that. The future awaiting us is full of different programs, systems, apps and platforms that have their own unique or mixed utilities and applications. I think we should start to refine and re-enforce the bridges between those, so there's no friction or division between them.
We don't want the same sony vs xbox, nike vs adidas, iphone vs android bullshit with this bright future that comes from the blockchain technology.

Right, so you're suggesting a cohesive network among all the applications/services/platforms that users engage in? @reddutopia

Exactly. You got me right. Platforms should support each other and work together instead of fighting out to then be bought out by the winner

First and foremost i would like to suggest an App be built for dtube , that will enable it to be more organized , i will also add that the searching platform be improved , to narrow down searching results to the minimum level....thats all , i hope i win coz have never won any contest ever...

@blackempror By an App, do you mean a mobile app like an iOS version, Android version etc.?

*P.S: all the best! The winner will be revealed after this post has received its payout :)

All the versions that can be done....and more servers should be available for faster asses.

Here are some small things, that are missing in my opinion:

  • Save preferences like night mode and video player quality
  • Improve the video player
  • Registering takes too long, this might scare a lot of users away
  • It would be nice to have an option to upload videos and schedule the release for the future.
  • An import function from YouTube might lurr some users :D

But this is obvious. my main idea is:

  • Due to the rewards you get for liking etc., people get attracted to begging, spam and other bad stuff. Manual report checking is probably impossible if the platform grows too much. A lot of people don't downvote, because it costs voting power (however, this prevents hate-downvotes).
If catching new people, who like your videos, would be weighted higher, than fans' likes, this could maybe decrease the effects from bots and other stuff and, like the hate-downvote prevention, the always-upvote-people are not overestimated, which should give new content creators the chance to get value from quality, not from the biggest fan base.

oh and display capitalized names ^^

@flixcoder thank you for the suggestion! I believe that this bot-voting thing applies not only to @dtube but across all platforms built on the STEEM Blockchain. I have completely no clue how can developers design a system that rewards based on quality of content but not fan base (because if there really isn't any quality, then how can one acquire such a huge fan base in the first place?)

Yes, there is probably no possibility to measure the quality. But if they implement, that votes from new followers weigh more, it will result in less fan base effects. So new quality-content creators should have a bigger chance in theory, right?

However, there is no guarantee that new quality-content creators will get more new followers compared to the veteran content creators. Especially when curation rewards are based on the total rewards for the post, I myself will usually upvote users who have consistent high paying posts to earn more curation.

I had been creating tutorial video on YouTube, but never on DTube. Today, I just uploaded my first DTube video, learn a lot from the platform.

I think the major issue I am having with DTube right now is that DTube video cannot be embedded for steemit post, unlike what Youtube and Vimeo can do. So, in future if I really want to post DTube stuff, I have to post on DTube and embed video from YouTube.

What Dtube can do? (Developer perspective)

  • There is iFrame provided by Dtube but they need to be whitelist by Steemit (I have made a post regarding which website can embed iFrame here, currently only YouTube, Vimeo and SoundCloud can do that)
  • A markdown preview on posting

Yes @superoo7 I understand where you're coming from with this. I believe embedding videos are extremely important especially for tutorials/guides because you want to show your readers how to perform certain action etc. This is something that has been bugging me for quite some time too.

Great question. I think to improve DTube the most, there really needs to be a better search function that allows folks to find videos easier and faster. I think if you look at the success of YouTube, I think much of that has been due to the google back end search platform. An improved search function will get more people introduced to content for which they are looking. Cheers!

Yes @captainbob I agree! In fact, I believe that searches are really important to keep users engaged on the platform as they can keep on watching new, different videos through multiple searches one after the other. Maybe even searching on Steemit can show results from DTube, eg. I search videography tutorials on Steemit Search Engine, and @captainbob's tutorial videos pop up in my results.

*P.S: I'm not sure how this can be executed, but this is what I have in mind

Hello,

I can't wait to start my DTube channel... I definitely am following you once I start it.

DTube channel launch this Monday, January 22, 2018

Hey @kendradickens, thank you so much for following me! I think you meant January 22, 2018 :P

By the way, why don't you explore the platform @dtube after launching your channel? Then you can come back here and share with us what you think can be improved in the platform for a better user experience :)

Okay... Well, do!!

Let's show recommended videos after the current one is done, and add an autoplay option. I get tired of manually finding videos to watch.

Oh yes, recommended videos (relevant videos) and an autoplay function!! Really helpful especially when I just go afk while listening to music..

*P.S: Are there many music videos uploaded on @dtube though? I have not searched nor listened to any music on @dtube so I'm not too sure myself.

Well, it depends. I upload music on there but it's my own, I imagine some others do it that way. I assume there are some accounts that just take VEVO videos from youtube and reupload it.

Wow, we've got a musician @atherz in the house yo!! Right, I can imagine that autoplay and recommended videos come in very handy for your channel.. It allows your audience to continue consuming your content without having to go through the trouble of browsing your channel and manually searching for songs. @dtube!!

There is the #music tag, but not all of them are pure music

They can improve the login system. If I logged in to DTube and I open a new window (with the same browser (Chrome)), I have to log in again.

Oh, I never realized this actually! Is this not the same for other conventional social media platforms (FB, Insta, YT, Twitter etc?) @flaci75

Thank you so much to everyone who has been sharing with me your ideas for @dtube!!! Please keep them coming, and for those who are unsure whether your idea is good/no good, don't worry!!!

Just upvote and comment away, everyone stands a chance to win 5 SBD!!

Do you know whether @dtube actually reads this? :D

I have no idea, honestly. However as long as we keep contributing our ideas and perspectives, this would be a great opportunity for @dtube to understand how we perceive their platform and grow accordingly. Else it would be a great loss for @dtube, not us. :P

Twitter Cards For Social Shares
Being able to play the video on Twitter in a tweet native format can bring a lot of attention to the platform and steem.

This is really true, if users can embed @dtube's content like how we can for Youtube, this helps to bring more users to use our platform.

I mean ... i have a great idea...
I have here ... a style chinese flying lantern... i will attach DTube logo on...

I will soon send @dtube to the moon .....
Yes sure it's the best way to promote DTube.....

See you my friend Dtubedor star :-)

Wow sending @dtube to the moon!! Now that's just fucking awesome @yann0975! Haha hope to see you too my friend (if I win the #dtubedor contest perhaps).

First of all i would like to suggest a mobile App be built for dtube since it does not have any,Registering takes too long, so many users are regular tempted to leave, I would also like an improvement in the video player, I would also like to state that it should add a recommend video has manually searching for videos is stressful and tiring, The login system also need some improvement like if I log in to DTube and I open a new tab still with the same browser , I would still have to log in again and finally add that the searching aspect be improved , to reduce searching results to the barest minimum.
These are my ideas to make DTube better and best.

Thanks for the contribution @williams21! Mobile app is really important, as we have experienced it ourselves the past few years has been a mobile era. The most enduring and successful apps have all established their brands and user base through their mobile applications, because that is where we spend most of our time in. @dtube maybe your next expansion? :D

that would be great if you guys look into it.

I would like to see the actual number of views of each video -which does not correspond to the upvotes!

Do you mean to say that the views should be the same number as the upvotes? Pardon me for asking so @sandrina.life but I would appreciate it if you can elaborate your suggestion! Really curious to understand more about this :)

No problem at all. I mean that the views should correspond to the actual number of people watching it not just to the people opening the steemit post. Some people upvote and don't watch it or some people watch the videos but not upvote.

Right, this is very true @sandrina.life. Do you have any idea how can the developers design the structure in such a manner that the views only count the actual number of people watching it?

Hi @aaronmcheong! I have no clue. I am not a developer, I leave this to the "technicians"

Well, D-tube is fast and nice, but the only thing is, in my opinion they have to chance there UI a bit to give it a very good look.

@darcoin right, UI can be improved to attract more users to continue using their platform.

When you post a video on dtube, you cannot embed it in a steemit post to play there itself. In the current case, click on a video will take you to dtube instead of playing there. Another thing to make dtube as useful as youtube is to allow for upvotes to work past 7 days. This can be done without changing the steem blockchain. The post will add a new comment automatically every 7 days from the posting of the video and any upvotes on the dtube video past the 7 days will go to the comment. This be more lucrative to regular and popular youtubers to switch over to dtube as they keep earning for views on the videos for a long time!

Is this really possible without changing the STEEM Blockchain @unsungcheese834? I'm not in the know-hows of the technical stuff, but if you do believe that this is possible and you even know how to do it, why don't you further elaborate how to do it so that @dtube may give it a go at it? :)

Your challenge was added to Steemit Contest Compilation (22.01-28.01): Win free SBD and STEEM (more than 50 contests!) for current week.

Thank you @aaronmcheong for giving Steemians (especially minnows) a chance to get free SBD.

Wow, thank you too @artz!! Glad that this contest can reach out to more people so that more people stand a chance to win SBD!! I'm just doing my part to help DTube grow, because I believe in its potential :)

...being able to embed videos from it would be nice 2!!!

Yes, like Youtube!!

The main thing in dtube that I would love added is the possibility to upload and submit without directly adding it to my steemit feed as I would like to be able to add a dtube video into a steemit feed I am writing. I understand I can write my steemit post in dtube but there is no preview, so maybe that would be an easy fix a preview to the description you are writing.

If I understand correctly, this goes back to the fact that @dtube is built based on the STEEM Blockchain (similar to the other applications like @dlive, @zappl, @steepshot, @dsound and @dmania). They're all linked to Steemit and thus all our posts will be reflected on Steemit and there is nothing they can do to 'hide' these posts unless the developers of Steemit decide to do so.

The main thing that I think will help DTube is an embeddable player. If they can first get this working for the Steemit platform, I can then see us being able to embed DTube videos onto our personal websites as well.

Yes, in fact embedding videos in any posts/websites/social media platforms can help drastically in introducing new audience to @dtube. DTube, lots of people are suggesting this!!

Clean UI.
It currently looks like steemit, and steemit looks like a forum.

I feel it needs to branch out, look clean, like you're going to watch something! :) simple but user retention.

Would you like to elaborate further how should the UI look like to become 'clean' and 'engaging'? If we can provide a clear description, perhaps @dtube then has no excuse but to listen to your suggestion.. (just saying) :P

Great contest idea!

What I would like DTube to do is make a simple video outlining what makes them better than Viuly. Right now I’m rooting for both platforms to continue to grow, but I’m open to converting to only one. 😄

For larger size videos, it takes quite a while to be uploaded and only after that you can press submit.

There could be a checkbox if marked could automatically submit a video once the uploading is done.

@cryptoroast! Sweet, this is really convenient. In fact, last night I was so occupied with work that I didn't upload my video because I wasn't around to click submit.. This can be really life-changing @dtube!!
