One thing we know is that emails and online communication are being surveilled by advertisers, governments, and hackers. We all should know how to properly encrypt our messages so that only the intended recipient is able to receive the message on sensitive communications.

Gnu Privacy Guard, also known as GPG, allows for easy, end2end encryption. It’s open source, free software that will assign you the public and private key needed to communicate using encryption. This helps eliminate the vulnerability of man in the middle attacks, which is the main way the government is able to intercept almost all online communication.
I suggest you try. You simply download and install the GPG Suite at http://gpgtools.org. Create a public/private key pair for your email address. Then, you can open your GPG Keychain and look me up on key lookup by searching for "0xEC3ED53D". Import my public key, and you can then encrypt a message intended only for me. If you enable the GPG settings by following this page, http://support.gpgtools.org/kb/gpgservices-faq/how-do-i-activate-gpgservices, you can simply highlight text and encrypt/decrypt it. If you can get this far, send me encrypted text in a comment, and I'll verify that you've done it correct.
