How often do we hear that money isn’t really all that important?
It’s a theme throughout literature and art. The wealthy tend to be portrayed as heartless tyrants – just think of Ebenezer Scrooge, It’s a Wonderful Life’s Mr. Potter, and The Simpsons’ Mr. Burns. Not much room for nuance with characterizations like this.
Yes, it is certainly true that money as a tangible object has no meaningful value in comparison to relationships and life experiences. But this is a simplistic way of looking at money and what you are able to do for your life through your finances. The true value and power of currency lies in the freedom that it can buy.
Freedom is a buzzword that we throw around a lot – you need to define what it means for you personally. My definition of freedom is simple – it means that I am able to largely do what I want whenever I want. I suspect that your definition will likely revolve around a variation on this same general impulse. You hear a lot of complaining and whining from people about their work – how quickly they would walk away from it all where they to win the lottery.
And yet the story plays out the same again and again for lottery winners and many new retirees – they quickly lose their mojo and sense of purpose when they aren’t working. It turns out that most of us crave some feeling that we are contributing to the world around us and helping others. In short, we like to work – at least when the work aligns with what we are passionate about and – crucially – when we have control over how we carry out our duties.
It is one matter to roll out of bed when you want, living where you want, and write what you want on your own timetable. It is quite another matter altogether to drag yourself out of bed at an hour you don’t want, commute a long distance that you dread, and sweat to meet an arbitrary deadline while wearing work clothes you don’t feel comfortable in.
Freedom allows you to dictate the terms that you labor under, choosing which clients you want to work with and which ones you don’t, simply because they consume more energy than they are worth. The path to achieving this freedom is paved with that necessary commodity we have been trained to think of as evil – money.
A healthier way to think of money, rather than something arbitrary or evil, is as a reflection of the number of people you are helping. You are only paid when you provide a good or service that someone else needs. Wealthy entrepreneurs have gotten to their station because they are capable of helping vast numbers of people – and in the process, earn themselves more freedom.
Here are some steps you can take to assure that you are working toward maximizing the greatest amount of freedom for yourself in your daily existence.
- Chart out your ideal day.
What if you were in total control today? What if you decided on the schedule and what you did, instead of someone else giving you an agenda? What would you do? Where would you go? Who would you spend your time with?
The more that you completely map out this scenario of what your ideal day will be like, the closer you will be to making it a full-blown reality. Working out the details is a crucial first step toward making it happen.
- Develop A Specific Vision
Don’t just think about one day in particular. Imagine what your life could look like over the long haul – in a year, or five, or even in a decade. Then imagine for yourself what steps, both big and small, you need to be taking today to make this picture come to life.
- Find Yourself A Role Model
I'm so grateful that I found a number of success mentors from an early age who I could emulate and ask for advice. You should seek out people who are living the life of freedom that you aspire to and begin to emulate their same steps from an early age. They will have much to show you about what it is like to set your own schedule and earn your own kind of success.
- Simplify Your Surroundings
The goal of wealth accumulation should not be to merely acquire material items. What you may find out is that the weight of all of these items has a way of holding you back and distracting you from what should really matter. Do your possessions really make you happy or do they just instill in you a desire to go shopping again? Decluttering and downsizing can be a crucial step toward earning freedom from your possessions.
- Lose The debt
You will never be free as long as you are held down by debt. These sums will constrain your choices and keep you from making decisions based on what you want, rather than dollars and cents. Think creatively about what you could be doing each month to generate additional cash flow and tackle that debt now.
- Commit Yourself Completely
You need to remove any hesitations or mental barriers that are holding you back from going for it. When you take full responsibility for your successes and failures, when your why (the reason for doing what you're doing) is powerful enough to shake the planet, when you have a no excuse, no limitations mindset and you're 100% committed to achieving your dreams, then nothing that possible will get in your path. How badly do you want to live the life you have imagined, one filled with total freedom? Can you commit?
- Find Yourself Side Income – And Make Sure It’s Passive.
The key to real wealth is residual or passive income – that is to say, money that you continue to be earning even while not working. There are many examples. Think of writers and artists who continue to receive royalties based off of sales of articles or books that they have written. Or perhaps you can imagine a property owner who continues to receive rent checks long after he has made repairs and refurbishments to the home. No matter how hard someone may work, there is simply no way they can compete with the magical compounding effect of someone who is in possession of multiple streams of passive income. There are many options out there if you push yourself to think creatively.
- Take Time Out For A “Day of Freedom”
There is such power in visualizing and even acting out what an ideal day would be like for yourself. What will you be doing when you're living your freedom lifestyle? Will you be traveling, working on personal projects, or exercising more? Why not try out now what that dream state will be like? Take a full day and practice living it now! It will give you inspiration over the long haul.
