Golden pheasants are famous for their brilliant colored plumage. Their underpart is bright red. Males have a golden-yellow crest with a hint of red at the tip. The face, throat, chin, and the sides of neck are rusty tan. The male is 90–105 cm in length, its tail is two-thirds of the total length.
The female is darker and more slender than the hen of that species. They have longer tail half her 60–80 cm length. The female's breast and sides are barred buff and blackish brown, and the abdomen is plain buff. Some abnormal females may later in their lifetime get some male plumage. Lower legs and feet are a dull yellow.
Golden pheasants live in the dense forests across Western and Central China. Male golden pheasants are longer than females. An adult male normally has a length up to 42 inches. Golden pheasants are poor fliers and spend most of their time on the ground. They mainly feed on seeds, insects and berries.
