Google Says Goodbye to Daydream VR

in #google4 years ago

Google have a knack for pushing new and exciting projects and then doing a complete 180 at times. They have canned many projects over the past few years, sometimes cannibalising smaller promising start-ups. I suppose this is what most major tech conglomerates must do as they allocate their resources towards essential functions and profitability. One of the most recently cancelled projects comes in the form of Daydream VR. Google daydream was a virtual reality platform created by Google that allowed smartphones to serve as displays for virtual reality experiences on android. Simply plug your handset into a fabric headset that allow adjustment of focus and control via remote control. It was simple and elegant, working on a number of android phones.

I have tried daydream a couple of times, it’s definitely cool and a slightly different build approach to Samsung’s but I would say it wasn’t too different to existing VR mobile offerings. It’s more of a cheap and easy gateway into the VR world but doesn’t offer anything ground breaking in my experience after playing with the VIVE and Oculus. It has been about 4 years since Google debuted their Vr platform for android and its main purpose was to serve a main repository for all VR orientated content. Games, apps and videos all consumed by VR. A much better approach over cardboard that provided comfort and utility.

The year is 2020 however, and one might say that yet another Google project has been 2020’d. Google have announced that Daydream VR is now discontinued and no support for the platform will be present in Android 11. So if you’ve been a fan, this is the end of the road but luckily there are plenty of other VR options. If you’re that serious about virtual reality, it would be best to take a deeper leap in to VR world with dedicated headsets such as the Oculus Quest finding great presence in the market.

The end of Google’s VR ventures is not surprising to me, as an entry to VR it still serves a very small niche. Perhaps with the upcoming drive from other manufacturers that will begin to bundle VR with phones is a battle that Google want to stay out of. We hope that Google’s AR projects continue to grow and perhaps they will visit VR in the future once more.
