The Seen, the Unseen, and the Unrealized (Chapters 5,7,9)

What is the Seen, the Unseen, and the Unrealized?

Decisions lead to actions and actions cause effect. Actions on any level cause two main effects, those that are seen and those that are unseen. The seen are the direct outcomes because of an action. The unseen are the outcomes that could have happened had another decision been made. It is near impossible to consider all the possibilities of what could have been the unseen. This lack of ability to do such may miss a larger and better opportunity, the unrealized.

The Significance of Considering the Unseen

Every decision made by us is based in what we value. Had our values been different in a past decision, we would be here today with totally different outcomes. The unseen is important to consider when making a decision because it allows us to search for the possibility of a more advantageous alternative. And who doesn't want something that is more advantageous to them? However, it could be easy to get caught up in trying to decide what is best when making a decision. It is important to remember that every action creates a ripple effect and in some way someone is going to benefit from it and others will lose out (Bylund).

Effective Regulation and Prohibition in Society

Dr. Bylund says effective regulations should change or impact an area in the market. If a regulation cannot do such then it is ineffective. This makes sense because ineffective regulations have no real impact on society as the do not bring about change. Regulations can become ineffective for multiple reasons. It can be because the population has little trust in the government or because rule makers are letting businesses defy regulations. Why would businesses not want to follow a regulation? Sometimes regulations can cause damage to a business by making it harder to produce product, increasing taxes, or taking away an advantage. However, regulations were not put in place to make it difficult to partake in the market, but were put to insure the safety and betterment of society. Prohibition is a very limiting and controlling aspect in the market that entirely limits a branch of a business.

Creating Value Without

Dr. Bylund argues "When losing the ability to produce, a society or city loses much of their prosperity." I agree with this because a society cannot be prosperous on their own if they are not able to make decisions on their own. Each business is going to search for a gap in the market that they can create value in. If there are too many regulations, businesses will avoid creating and expansion, ultimately limiting the development of society. Entrepreneurs should focus on showcasing value instead of trying to create it. This is because value cannot be created, but can be restored (Bylund). This would create the opportunity for society to realize the value in a product or area of life that was once forgotten.
