Question: Should the government have a right to limit our individual freedoms to preserve the freedom of others?
I think that it is important and necessary for the government to have some control over individual freedoms, especially for the sake of others. It’s kind of like a social contract we all sign by being a citizen of this country: we give up some of our individual rights for certain benefits that the government provides for us. For example, we pay taxes and in return the government uses that money to pay for public schools and infrastructure. The overarching protections that the government provides also include all the rights that are given to us as “American People”, like freedom of religion or speech. By having the government in charge of protecting the freedom of everyone (even at the expense of some individual rights) everyone is able to freely enjoy their lives and prosper without fear of unfair prosecution. Another really good example is the government regulation on discrimination against gender, race, and sexuality. The Supreme Court’s decision to federally legalize gay marriage may have limited the rights of some people/states to deny the legal rights of those not in a heterosexual marriage, but it gave everyoone the right to marry who they loved. Same with the laws about interracial marriage, or even just general work place discrimination. There have been many cases where companies have expressed discrimination or biases in their hiring, treatment, an/or payment of employees, and because the government has regulations in place, those that are mistreated can find justice and hold their employers accountable. The individual rights that are limited are very insignificant when it comes to protecting the country as a whole and so that is why I believe that it is more necessary for the government to limit some individual liberties in order to protect and preserve the freedom of others. Truly, being a part of a country is like being a part of a group project, sometimes individual compromises are made for the betterment of the whole.
