This post is a response to the question ["What are the key differences between dual federalism and cooperative federalism?"] (https://peakd.com/gradnium/@mackenziejones/week-08-questions-federalism-and) posed by @mackenziejones.
Dual federalism is where the authority and power of the country are divided into two main levels that operate separate of each other. This would give states the chance to make some of their own laws according to their people without the federal government being able to intervene. The downside of dual federalism is that tension between the federal and state government are always high which can cause issues for the efficiency of the country. Cooperative federalism is when there are two levels, state and federal, which share the authority and power. Cooperative federalism allows state and federal power to overlap more. This improves the relationship between the state and federal government so that they are more likely to work together and have the most efficiency. The downfall is that there is a decrease in the power the state has simply because the federal government can now intervene.
What Is The United States?
In the United States, they are divided technically into two being federal and state. We also add a third one into the mix at the lowest level of local. The United States started out on more of a dual federalism stance in the beginning of the country forming. Around the 1930s, the United States moved from a dual to a cooperative federalism. For the next thirty years, the United States maintained cooperative federalism. Now, the United States is known as a progressive federalism which has shifted us back to where the federal government is trying to regain some power.
What Do I Think?
I think that both dual and cooperative federalism have good aspects, but I do not know if they United States could go back to either one. Dual federalism is great simply because I feel like it gives more of a voice to the people of each state. Cooperative federalism is great because you have the state and federal level working together to get more stuff done. Overall, dual, and cooperative federalism have their advantages and disadvantages, it just depends on what the country is looking for in a government.
