This post is in response to the question "What industry has the most potential to be effected most by artificial intelligence? Do you believe the net consequences will be positive or negative?" posed by @dbruce.
I believe that it will not be a specific industry that will be most affected by the advancement of artificial intelligence, but rather certain kinds of jobs. Unskilled labor will likely be the most affected as businesses attempt to minimize their cost of labor and enhance their efficiency. Given the Q&A after the talk last night, I think that yes there will be some unskilled labor positions that remain safe given the complexity of the movement required; however, these do not make up the majority of unskilled labor positions. Jobs in fast food, simple manufacturing, grocery stores, etc. will be replaced first as companies attempt to cut cost. Regardless of if in the long term this will balance out, at the increased rate technology has been advancing at, it will cause a major displacement in low-income workers initially. This also becomes more concerning as we consider the impact this may have on gender income inequality as women make up the majority of workers in “unskilled” blue-collar, or often referred to as “pink-collar,” work. All this being said, I believe that these advancements will ultimately bring a net good, but only if we are able to ensure safety and resources to displaced workers until they are able to find another job. In other words, if the growth of technology is going to advance quickly enough to cause disruption, we must provide safety nets to workers that are proportional to the disruption experienced.
