I cannot say with certainty whether or not socialism will always result in totalitarianism due to the unpredictability of humanity; however, based on each system's beliefs, I would predict it is highly likely socialism paves the way for totalitarianism.
Totalitarianism is simply a more extreme version of socialism. Instead of the government solely regulating all of the economy's production and distribution, totalitarianism advocates for society's complete submission to governmental control. Socialists do not necessarily associate themselves with totalitarians, however society's ignorance to the numerous similarities between the two styles of dictatorship seems significantly alarming. The fate of any nation falling under totalitarian rule remains in society's efforts to observe and understand when the government has obtained too much control. Socialism is just the subtle beginning of the journey to totalitarianism; any country submitting to socialism is under extreme risk of complete submission to governmental power arriving sooner than they think. It's up to society to educate themselves on what is happening in the economy in order to subside the evil intentions of any form of dictatorship waiting to take over every nation possible.
