Discussion Paper: The Founder
The Founder is a film that shows the back story of the billion-dollar company burger company and what happened through this journey to success. I want to analyze this film's entrepreneurial aspects to understand better what steps an entrepreneur will take when starting a company. After finding the entrepreneurial aspects I want to discuss why these aspects are attractive to the overall film message. Another thing I will analyze is the relationship and interactions present between the entrepreneur and society
The film starts with a man named Ray Kroc is the head salesman of Prince Castle Sales. Ray Kroc Had an idea of making a milkshake blender but has five separate blenders on one machine to make them faster which in turn increased the demand. His idea falls short when he pitched it to a diner in his area and the owner declined. This interaction is quick but it shows a small interaction between an entrepreneur and society. The entrepreneur Ray Kroc and society being the owner of the diner declined his pitch due to a lack of information and seeing the blender in action. Ray Kroc is driving down to Los Angeles for a business meeting Ray stops at a place called Mcdonald’s and he is astonished at how fast their service was. When eating his burger he meets the owner Mac Mcdonald and Mac shows him around the operation. Mac and Dick Mcdonald are perfect examples of an entrepreneurs finding a problem and improving on it for the better of society. The problem throughout the film was food service takes forever when making food for the customer. The McDonald brothers took the burger cooking process and refined it to cut the time down tremendously. They made it to where there is a station for each step when making the burger. This aspect is an example that makes this film an entrepreneurial film by showing entrepreneurs improving on the issue with the food industry at that time. Another aspect of the film is when Ray Kroc bought McDonald’s from under the Macdonalds brothers for about 3 million dollars because he signed a contract that said that no one can change the franchise at all without the brother's approval first and the only way to change this was to buy the company. When buying the company from the brothers they did a handshake deal on 1 percent of royalties with the company but never saw any of the royalties. This aspect is an example of a person taking a company from the original owners by using loopholes to legally take over the company. This is an example business takeover or hostile takeover. This is the process of taking a business by buying a company out of its shares or ownership.
The founder is an entrepreneurial film because it shows the process of an entrepreneur finding an issue with society and fixing it. Then later down the line having someone steal an idea or altogether steal the company. The Founder is a good film to show future entrepreneurs what to watch out for.
