Year in year out it has been a common trend here in Kenya to have various Varsities releasing high and quality graduates to the job market. A whole round sum up of this constitutes into thousands of young minds seeking a place to explore what he/she had learnt in their last four years of the current 8-4-4 education system. According to the current country’s deteriorating economy all those who with the ability to work secure a chance of being employed leaving behind a big chunk of unutilized abilities. This leads to most seeking a master and doctorates in various fields to be more competitive enough, despite that this programs incurs a lot of costs to cater for fees so not all can afford it. Depression will tend to kick in most youths minds due to frustrations of what was expected turning to what wasn’t meant to be. Parents and guardians feel the loss too because they’ve spent on fees yet their ‘investments’ is on a downfall.
Being unemployed with a skillful possession could lead misused abilities in harm of other citizens, to be precise most cybercrimes are as a process of high professional IT and computer students who use it to get easy money. This year we witnessed a 28 year old man charged with hacking into KRA servers and led to loss of Sh4 billion after tracking the syndicate. Was this what was meant to be, having attained education for at least twelve years and end up being unsuccessful in life and opt other fraudulent ways to be successful?.
World’s most prolific chess player Josh Waitzkin quoted that 'on the face of challenges we will tend to brittle once we have in mind that success is determined by the ingrained level of ability.' Our main challenge here being unemployment we each have abilities outside. we acquired in campus which when invested on can bring a better future in someone’s life. You do not need to be what you have studied for and end up being hooked in a work place which you only work for the sake of income not because you enjoy what you are doing. Being open minded is the key here, doing what is best for you despite what negative perception others will have on what you will be doing. We all know what differentiate prosperity from poverty is property, with this in mind you have to look on what you have in hand and how we can use it to create something to generate income from. Most have portable computers with them which they spend time either watching movies, playing games or just for social media which is right, but can’t you target on being a freelancer with the current growth in writing industry with supporting sites like fiverr.com, upwork.com and iwriter.com where one can monetize his/her writing and research abilities.
A major problem is that most individuals do not know how to make money unless it comes from employers as income, this has brought in by a close end mindset which hinders development of one’s own business so that they too can employ others too. Entrepreneurship is a growing industry and needs innovative minds creating workable ideas when implemented. While in campus there used to be students who ran tuck shops, hawked second hand clothes and earned something out of it. After campus armed with a degree and academic papers pride kicks in, in such a way that one doesn’t want to get involved in tasks that are seen meant for those who were merely high school dropouts. One is willing to go tarmacking for almost three or so years before getting a job which eventually won’t start with a six figure salary and all will be consumed by loans, taxes and day to day expenses hence causing a need for another loan or having advance salaries. Those three years would be enough to start small in his own business or formulating a business plan and handing it in to franchisee for funding or to banks who can finance it with a loan.
Establishment of links is a major key factor to secure post in institutions, I remember being told in a business class that ‘you should know people, 70% of your salary depends on established links while the remaining 30% will come from your academic excellence’. I find this statement true because we are living in a me first world with a common slogan ‘everyone for himself and God for us all’, to thrive in such particular juncture you need to be well connected. So start now socializing with a high profile people when a chance prelude itself. In all education levels students should be encouraged to exercise growth mindset which will enable them create opportunities and comfortably solving life challenges as the fall due.
