It's an Intel i7-990X CPU, so it is (was) expensive on paper. But any mid-range CPU will do, since GPUs are doing most of the work anyway. And they are also cheap (AMD R9 280X), but still very powerful for BOINC because of their high FP64 performance. I wrote more about it here:

Let's say $100 for a CPU, $300 for two R9 280X, $100 for the mobo and $300 for PSU, HDD, case, peripherals etc. That's about $800 for the PC, but you have to add another $400-500 for the watercooling stuff (waterblocks, reservoir, pump, radiator, tubing, fittings, clamps etc). However, two GPUs can still be cooled with air only, it's not really necessary to water cool them.
