Older laptops shouldn't be any more likely to overheat than newer ones, they just won't be as productive. Just make sure the fans still operate properly and any dust bunnies are blown out. I've had a couple of very old laptops running boinc recently and they didn't have any problem. For about a year I had an old Dell Pentium III laptop running 24/7 for magic jack purposes and it also ran BOINC. Currently I have an old iBook (1.42 GHz Power PC) running 24x7 as I use it to digitize some old 8mm video and it is running BOINC when it isn't doing that. Neither one has problems overheating but obviously they aren't generating a lot of credit either.
