Around 7pm UTC, a significant amount of Gridcoin was distributed among crunchers of the projects YAFU and DrugDiscovery@home through the rain system. Anyone running these projects with a non-zero RAC should have received some GRC in their wallets. If you are part of the pool, you can expect a disproportionally large payout for your work on these two projects.
Project Rain: yafu (Amount 3426.83535 GRC )
Project Rain: drugdiscovery@home (Amount 2533.0784 GRC )
This system is integrated into the Gridcoin wallet GUI, and allows anyone to distribute GRC to the workforce of a scientific project based on their individual RAC contributions. It enables project admins to get more than their baseline share of the Team Gridcoin compute power by incentivising more computers to run their work units. I view this as the biggest value proposition Gridcoin brings to the table.
This rain is a chance for us to support the projects who provide rain or have been rained on. Lets all point some extra compute to YAFU and DD@H to show our appreciation and encourage continued use of the rain functionality.
If I missed any other projects that were rained on, let me know and I will add them!
Remember that @vortac is providing a 10,000 GRC rain to the project GPUGrid on New Years Eve to celebrate reaching 3 billion BOINC credits as announced here! To earn your part of this reward, simply point your GPU at GPUGrid between now and New Years Eve.
Well done, @dutch!
I'm sorry that I was not part of these two projects, and I believe it will be great if such initiatives will be announce well in advance. This will encourage users to join the projects that you want to promote.
No. You have to stalk @dutch's computer lab and try to predict his mind.
I like to think it's another positive aftereffect of my giveaway :)
How do this rain system work? I'm pretty curious.
Any user can use their wallet to generate rain with their funds, and distribute it on a project of their choice. If a user rains 1000 GRC on project X, and you are currently contributing 10% of the total compute power to project X, you receive 10% (100 GRC) of the rain.
While the Gridcoin network rewards a base level of compute for all projects on the whitelist, this enables a project admin to draw in even more compute power to their project.
Understood, thank you!
You're welcome. =)
Do you 'mine' Gridcoin?
No, no, I'm just trading for now.
Nice one @dutch, its good to see these features used
..I wondered where that GRC came from.. before reading this I thought it might be two faucet drops somehow combined!
I realise the answer is likely to be 'no', and it's certainly not any kind of development priority, but is there any scope for raining to the entire whitelist? That is, apart from raining each whitelisted project individually, could someone rain to all of the GRC 'ecosystem' in a single operation? Would that be useful or of interest?
You guessed right, in that currently this cannot be done without manually raining on each project. It would be pretty cool to be able to do this though, as it allows generous benefactors so support all of the BOINC projects.
I hate seeing this vote still in the wallet for DD@home being a project I have crunched since its first initial short appearance on the Gridcoin whitelist https://steemit.com/gridcoin/@parejan/wu-availability-status-for-gridcoin-whitelisted-projects seems to say Team Gridcoin does no want to support or crunch DD@home.. Although checking https://boinc.drugdiscoveryathome.com/server_status.php clearly shows work and it has since the short stint of what I could only guess was processioning the 5 billion work units since coming back as the project continuously generates work so constantly the number of available goes up and down ,sometimes 0. Tasks in progress 83561 , this vote should be void and default to /dev/null !! Come on people vote to support the community and Gridcoin project itself , vote even if you do not crunch it! It would be awesome to also see their GPU/cuda application go back in action live again...
