Step by step guide for free GRC
In this guide I will show you how you can get about 2 GRC/day completely for free for about two months! This makes 120 GRC completly for free! For this we will use Google Compute Engine.
Please note that you need a credit card to prevent abuse of this method! Your credit card won't be charged!
What is Google Compute Engine
Google Compute Engine is a service from google that allows you to host virtual machines (VMs) on the same infrastructure that google uses for its own services such as Youtube and Google Search. You may ask yourself now what a virtual machine is. That's actually a really good question and I will quickly explain it here. If you already know that you can skip that.
What is a virtual machine
A virtual machine is an emulation of a computer system. With the help of virtual machines one can run multpile operating systems on one computer that run completly independent and at the same time. So when you get access to a VM you can think of it as you get access to a remote computer.
Step 1
Google offers a $300 or 1 year (depends on what arrives first) trial of its Compute Engine.
Go to http://www.cloud.google.com, press try it for free and login with your Google account. If you don't have one you can creat an account for free.
Step 2
You will see this site now. Make sure that the first radio button is No and the other two should be Yes.
Step 3
The next step is to type in your address and your credit card information. You won't pay anything! This is just to prevent abuse!.
Step 4
Now you have to create a new project.
You can name it as you want. It doesn't matter.
Step 5
You can now create a virtual machine. Just click on vm instances.
Step 6
Here you can configure your VM. I suggest you to select the vm with 8 vCores.
Select a destination in the US it's cheaper!
The price you see will be paid from your free credit and you have to pay nothing even if your free credits run out.
I quote here from Google:
No, the trial is free and you will not be billed. When your trial ends, your account will be paused and you'll have the option to upgrade to a paid account.
Step 7
Select SSH via web browser to connect to your vm.
Step 8
You will see a console window in the browser like on the image below.
In there type one after another the following commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install boinc
boinccmd --join_acct_mgr https://www.grcpool.com username password
Step 9
Configure your new host on grcpool.com as always :)
Step 10
Go back to console and type:
boinccmd --join_acct_mgr https://www.grcpool.com username password
this should sync your client with the pool.
Step 11
Wait a few minutes and then type:
boinccmd --get_simple_gui_info
You will something like on the image that shows that your instance is running a boinc task. From now on you will build up your RAC. At the moment I get about 2GRC/day just from this instance. And it's completly free :)
End
I hope this guide is useful to some of you. If you have any trouble or need further assistance do not hesitate to ask me :)
KaBOOM! Love to see winning plays like this. Congrats.
I'm making more than 2 GRC, it's has to do a lot with the settings. Check out how here:

Be aware that this is against their TOS, and you will be charged if they catch you.
Further, you cannot actually run GPU tasks on Google Cloud with the free trial, as you cannot add a GPU to a VM without a paid account. The last screenshot is probably not from your VM? Or you are running AM CPU jobs?
Coin mining is against TOS, not boinc crunching
And you are not coin mining?
They actually disallow anything to do with earning crypto. I mean, it is unlikely it will go wrong, but people should be aware of it.
I agree mining is about securing transactions and contributing to the network.
Boinc crunching is simply participating in scientific research.

AWS used to do a 12 month free usage teir, really low power kit but a year of free crunching was nice
Helping science and getting free gridcoins? All at the expense of google? I love it XD

Thank you :D
GRC = 0.00001218btc
120GRC = 0,0014616btc
0,0014616BTC =~ 3,94$ (1BTC = 2700$)
2months and 3,94$ profit? It doesn't make sense
This is correct. The VMs on a free trial are very underpowered.
Lets not give people excessively high expectations.
Mind you, the price of GRC is far below its ATH and will continue to rise, so the profit will be more if you hold the coins for a while.
The Google Compute servers are not underpowered this guy is clearly using the wrong project I was on had 30 mag (TN-Grid). No wonder he/she had 2GRC per day he/she is using Amicable Numbers!
Yeah, if he was running CPU work for AM then that is a little inefficient. At the moment 30 mag is about 5 GRC per day, so its a fair bit better. How long ago was this? Competition has gone up a lot over the past 2 months.
I think the VMs are underpowered, unless you go for the gruntier ones but they are much less cost effective for the price you pay based on what I looked at.
Yes it's not cost effective to actually buy these VMs but for the free trial why not, this was last month so yeah competition has gone up!
When you choose different projects you can do more than 2GRC I think. Also my RAC is not on top yet so it will be also more with this project. And you can help science. It's not all about profit and fast money...
I just did this today with Microsoft azure! And you beat to posting about it lol
Thank you for the summary!
Your last screenshot may be a bit misleading though, because you probably should pick an CPU project :)
Hi, I used up my $300 trial with no issue. I earned way more than 2GRC per day. I ran TN-Grid with about ~30mag. This gave me about 7 GRC per day.
I got a 4 core instance, but I can only get 3 WUs to run on it concurrently, any idea how to solve?
EDIT: Ignore, forgot to set my BAM! preferences
Just got set-up with Azure with a free £150, 1 month trial and I am doing the same thing. Your sparked the idea and this post was very helpful.
I did find that I couldn't get the free Google trial in the UK without being a business, it looks like individuals cannot get the free trial.
Someone sent me here :)
It turns out I've written a guide on the same subject... unfortunately.
But fortunately it turned out to be more in depth, with configuration of all accounts and use of boinctui. I've repeated the whole registration process starting with fresh google email, with screenshots step by step and good explanations along the way.

Anyway good guide upvoted and resteemed.
