I think a lot of this is the fact that demand is manipulated by a heavily artificial market propped up by state regulation, taxation and of course the derivatives markets.
If government didn't monopolize a few big researchers, perhaps there would be free market competition and with that innovation on always trying to provide a better product for a better price than the other guy.
Because there's such massive monopolies, there's no real incentive. Instead they released medicine which takes care of just the symptoms and leads you to buy 5 to 10 other medications due to the side effects of the one. It think it's a rather nefarious industry personally.
