Good news everyone!

@cm-steem has set up three BOINC team challenges hosted by Gridcoin in January!

A team challenge is a friendly competition among teams that focuses on specific BOINC projects. These competitions present a great opportunity to flex our team's computational muscles. They also give us a nice way to reach out to and meet the communities of other teams. Think of them as BOINC pick-up-games!

The prize is science, and in the words of @dutch, the winner is the project. The three projects are SETI@home, World Community Grid, and Asteroids@home. To participate, direct your computations at the appropriate project during its week of competition.

Competition 1 - SETI@home

When: January 6th - January 13th
Where: SETI@Home BOINC project
Who: As of this posting, there are 10 teams ready to go! Details here.
How: Sign up for the BOINC project, SETI@home, join a participating team (Gridcoin for us!) and run tasks for the project between the dates of January 6th and January 13th.

SETI@Home was launched as a distributed computing project in May 1999 by the Berkeley SETI Research Center. It operates by packing data recorded in the 2.5 MHz wide band of the SERENDIP IV instrument into “work units” to be analyzed by the idle processing power of volunteers. After analyzation, the completed work units are returned to SETI@Home servers in California. This concept was developed further in 2002 and resulted in the BOINC software being released in 2004. We owe a huge thanks to SETI@home for catalyzing the creation of the BOINC system we all know and love today!

Competition 2 - World Community Grid

When: January 14th - January 21st
Where: World Community Grid
Who: As of this posting, there are 10 teams ready to go! Details here.
How: Sign up for the BOINC project, World Community Grid, join a participating team (Gridcoin for us!) and run tasks for the project between the dates of January 14th and January 21st.

For information on WCG, I'll direct you to @jedigeiss's write-up found here.

Competition 3 - Asteroids@home

When: January 22nd - January 29th
Where: Asteroids@home
Who: As of this posting, there are 10 teams ready to go! Details here.
How: Sign up for the BOINC project, Asteroids@home, join a participating team (Gridcoin for us!) and run tasks for the project between the dates of January 22nd and January 29th.

For information on Asteroids@home, I'll direct you to @jedigeiss's write-up found here.

Prime your processors, warm up your power supplies, and charge your batteries -- we've got ourselves a BOINC-off!

Thank you, cm, for setting these up!

man I love GRC! it was rough when i got started but the community set me straight :)

In for WCG!

count me in! I'll unleash my GTX 1080 on SETI. lol

Look forward to participating, even though my magnitude is small.

How do the timed competitions work? Do they only count tasks that are downloaded after it starts? Or do you get rewarded for any tasks that completes in the competitive window?

This is a good question because I have been working on SETI since yesterday. I was thinking of pausing all of my SETI tasks right now and finishing everything else except for SETI and then resuming SETI when the competition starts.

This is a good question! We think that the competitions only care about completed tasks during the competition. If you pause them now, make sure that they do not expire!

Could be wrong here, but I guess we'll find out soon = ).

If I find the time I'll hop over to the BOINC forums and ask them and relay the answer back here.

WCG is the only project I run at the moment. So I'll join for WCG :D
