There will be tournaments for steem monsters and winners will get STEEM, SBDs, upvotes, Cards, and Card Packs. I anticipate during the tournaments there might be teams. Since gridcoin has an amazing community, it makes sense that gridcoin should form a team. This is also a great opportunity to promote gridcoin. This game looks like it’s going to be highly successful based on the pre-sale of these cards. $25,000 have been sold in the last week with over 10,000 boster packs already sold. Is it a coincidence that Steem and SDB just went up soon after the release of this game? So right now go and get some cards while the Steem and SBD is at high rate. People who bought last week we’re paying way more SDB. There are 59 cards in this game some of them are very rare and the legendary ones are going for $60. We don’t know what powers they have now but the ones I like are the ones with the colour purple! The colour of the Gridcoin logo! Purple power!
Yes the Lightning Dragon is a bit pushing it- but it does have a purple tongue! LOL Maybe that tongue has POWER.
Again this a great opportunity to get the gridcoin community together to form a team and have fun at the same time promote gridcoin because it looks like steem monsters is going to be a big success and many steemit whales for example @berniesanders are promoting the game.

Is there any freeware way to start playing?
I don't think so, as the mechanics of the game have not been set. Right now people are just purchasing and trading cards and I believe the the actual game is schedule to start in September. Seems like a long time but I am sure it will fly by quickly. Groups are starting to form teams and guilds. I am sure there are people in the gridcoin community who would be interested in this game hence my post.
