Finished product first:
I've recently started mining Gridcoin and while reading about Gridcoin came across steemit. One of the pages I read was jeffpatat's 3D printed Gridcoin (https://steemit.com/utopian-io/@jefpatat/the-3d-printed-gridcoin-chip-is-finished-and-it-looks-great). I liked Jeff's idea and decided to try to design and print my own. I think jeffpatat's looks great, but I wanted to make a version that matched the Gridcoin logo.
First I created the 3D model using Autodesk Fusion 360. I designed it to match a standard poker chip, so it is 39 mm wide and 3.4 mm thick. It was also designed so the Gridcoin logo will display correctly on both sides of the chip. You can see a render of the current version below.
When the design was finished I exported it to 3 different STL objects:
- The White
- The Purple
- The Clear
The clear STL's are 0.2 mm thick full coverage hexagons used to give the top and bottom of the final printed coin a uniform smooth surface.
Once the 3 STL files were exported I used Simplify3D to assign the STL's to different extruders and slice the object to create a gcode file. My 3D printer uses a diamond hot end (http://reprap.org/wiki/Diamond_Hotend) so it can print up to 3 different filaments. After slicing with Simplify 3D I ran the output GCode file through a custom program I'm working on to make the file work better with the Diamond hot end.
After I had my final GCode, I sent it to my printer and this was the result!

If you have any suggestions, let me know! I've only printed one so far, but plan to print more. I may even try switching the purple color to a different color to be used for different denominations of poker chips.
I've uploaded the STL files to print your own here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2655722
Oh damn, it's amazing seeing the logo transformed into a physical object like this. If you're still around on here then give me a shout - I really need one of these for my desk! Would be great to have a physical replica of the actual logo to add to my portfolio :)
Hey, I'm still here and still have plenty of them! Great work on the logo, it makes a nice physical coin. :) Let me know your preferred way to communicate privately so I can get your address and send you a few!
Thanks for replying! Are you in the Team Gridcoin Slack? You could drop me a message there if so - same username. If not then I'll work something else out :)
Do I have the right link? https://grcinvite.herokuapp.com/ Looks like I need an invite code.
Ooh darn, I forgot they changed that.. Alright, I've set up an email instead solely for this purpose :) drop me a line at [email protected]

Can't help it, but in the first picture it just looks like a tasty lollipop to me!
Anyway nice work!
I was going for a slow-mo coin flip, but you are right, it just looks like a lollipop.
Brilliant! Glad to see some more 3D geeks out here :-D
Maybe make a pull request for the stl to add the design to the marketing github

Thanks! Per your suggestion, I did a pull request adding my 3 STL's: https://github.com/gridcoin-community/Gridcoin-Marketing/pull/4

Why dont you try selling them for GRC?
If anyone is interested let me know. I would be happy to share them, and getting some GRC back would be great!
Very cool how long did it take to make it and is this your first attempt at 3-D printing ?
Thanks! Between designing, slicing, and preparing to print it probably took me around 2 - 3 hours. It was one of those things where my first design and first print worked mostly without issue. Those are rare, but nice when they happen. I've been 3D printing for around 4 years.
This looks great! Will you share the GCode with us?
Thanks! I just uploaded the STL files here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2655722
If you really want the GCode let me know and I can send it to you. I did not upload it to Thingiverse, as it is fairly specific to my printer.
Perfect. Many thanks!

Sure! Let me know your preferred way to communicate privately so I can get your address and send you one!
are you on steemit.chat maybe? :D
I am not, sorry!

cool! :D
I have been 3D printing for almost 2 years and I have to say what an awesome multicolor model! I wonder if one day there would be a way to store your coins on one or to add a small usb to the back? Great job, happy Printing!!
Hey there, nice to see that there are more people interested in printing coins. I dedicated my steemit blog to printable crypto. I am still at the start tho.
Thanks for sharing, I especially like that it is a multicolor print
Hi!
