Americans should be armed if they personally choose to, are trained and have a permit!! I rarely hear the real issue debated which is that the violent use of guns in our homes and communities will never be used as a rationale to take away guns from law abiding citizens.
Guns are needed by law abiding citizens to protect us from tyranny - the "government" oppressing us. Limiting the presence of guns because of violent uses of guns is not going to happen because I want my gun so my government cannot take away my freedoms..... This IS the true intent by our founding fathers for the 2nd Amendment in the United States Constitution and why we are the greatest nation on earth!

That's a good point. I let them frame the argument when I concede the need for training and a permit!
the problem with permits is that all too often local cops and such are allowed to discriminate and then they do, usually along the lines of race class and gender. Even in places that are "shall issue" the fee is usually enough to put it out of reach of poor people, essentially a poll tax.
I've heard that some states do not require a permit. I don't think we should need a permit. Its just another way of collecting taxes.
worse, it is another form of discrimination and disenfranchisement.
