This is a deeper look into the French MAS 36 rifle. I covered the historical background for this in a previous post. Be sure to check that out as well.

The MAS borrowed heavily from other weapons of the time. Considering it was so late in the game, it may in fact be considered the most advanced military general issue bolt action rifle. The relatively small production numbers, and the 7.5mm French cartridge are really the only thing keeping it from reaching SMLE or K89K status.

Bolt

the rifle features a cock-on-closing system like the SMLE, allowing for smooth operation. The bolt handle is also angled down and forwards putting it directly above the trigger. This allows for quick transitions between the bolt and the trigger. You can also learn to fire with your middle finger for stupid fast firing considering that it is a bolt gun. The bolt also has angled locking lugs, allowing for a 60 degree bolt rotation instead of the full 90. This really was built for speed.

Construction

This only has 5 user serviceable parts, and none of them are small. They are idiot proof for take down and put back together. The sights aren't even adjustable. They were zeroed at the arsenal by replacing the rear aperture sight with ones with off-center holes until it shot straight. Its goofy, but no other gun can stay as zeroed as this probably can.

Service Life

This rifle served in various forms until 1978. After the introduction of the MAS 49 its role was greatly reduced, but it was a staple for rear guard and colonial defense forces.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed this look at the MAS 36
