Young generation habits lead to electricity savings, but is it good?

New generations habits appear to have a positive impact on the ecosystem, but also the overall consumption of the energy. Accordingly, spending more time indoors results in a significant energy saving.

In 2012, Americans spent eight more days in the home compared to 2003, according to a study. Though at first glance this means that they have used more energy by keeping the light bulbs and the televisions lit, things are not exactly like that. The fact that they have not left the house means that there are fewer people walking around malls, shops and cafes out there, so less energy is used in institutions and shopping centers.

In total, 1,700 billion British Heat Units (BTU) or 1,8% of the national total were saved in 2012, according to an analysis published in Joule. The data showed that in 2012 Americans spent a day less on the roads and a week less in other buildings than their homes compared to a decade earlier. The tendency to stay in the home and not get out of town is strong for people aged 18-24: young people spent 70% more time in the house than the rest of the population.

At the other end of the spectrum, people over 65 were the people who spent more time outside the home compared to 2003. Now, researchers want to analyze changes in energy consumption in other countries as a result of changes in lifestyle. It is quite difficult to find the exact reasons for these changes, but the study authors suggest it is a combination of remote work and services, such as streaming video and online shopping. With flexibility at work, Amazon Prime and Netflix do not give you any reason to get out of the house.

Myself I have observed this behavior and beside the so called energy power saving, I couldn't say that this is a healthy lifestyle. Of course, with the emerging technologies we need less and less to get out to perform our work duties, socializing and other activities, but for sure we just strain ourselves from real experiences. We should save energy, but we should consume it and make the world a better place for us and for those after us. And for sure, this cannot be achieved from the couch watching TV! Not to say more about our health and body which needs to be put at work to be sustained for a long time.
