The invisible government
“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses…those who manipulate this seen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country”
“We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of.”
“They govern us by their qualities of natural leadership, their ability to supply needed ideas and by their key position in the social structure.”
“In theory, every citizen makes up his mind on public questions and matters of private conduct. In practice, if all men..study for themselves the abstruse economic, political & ethical data involved in every question, they would find it impossible to come to a conclusion about anything”
If man is subjected to the harshness of reality, he will be presented with two options of which he has voluntary choice to make: to improve, or to die. This is the natural process of evolution, the natural process of progression. The weak perish and the strong continue.
Too many American people are infantile. The education system is weak.
American people are not taught in public schools how to pay taxes. Nor are they taught how to establish themselves online. They were not taught how rank a video for people to find them or how to make a video so people can learn who they are. [1]
Think about it.
He says that in theory, everyone buys the best commodes offered but in practice, one buys because he or she is suggested to do so. He gives the example of bread and soap. If one wanted to find the best quality for either of these, with the finest ingredients and containing nothing unnecessary, one would need to price and chemically test each brand of bread or soap to come to the truth.
He says that the economy would be, “helplessly jammed up” if this switch were to occur.
The fact that propaganda is frowned upon by most confronted by the notion of an invisible force making decisions allows contemplation of an alternative. He suggests there could be a council of wise men who would make our decisions such as what to eat, what to wear, who to elect into office and such. But he says, we have chosen the later; that of open competition. Free competition to be organized b leadership & propaganda.
His main point for stating that we have chosen the later is due to a logical conclusion. The fact that each man’s intelligence & skill bleeds into every aspect of which he is involved.
Take for example the woman involved in a community group which has a core mission of expanding appreciation for nature, and preserving the natural parks and woodlands. She wants to dissuade major developers to her town, and suggest where new power farms should be constructed so they are the least bit obtrusive to the forest. She works a secretarial job at a firm, and a night job tutoring children in math.
Should one of her students throws trash out the window onto the ground outside, the logical assumption is that she would reprimand the student and speak of the environment and why it should be respected.
She disseminates into other groups which she has influence. [2]
This is the main point of the first chapter. The “invisible government” is dominant skill and intelligence. Those who have refined these skills press into the people and mold them to their likelihoods.
Many will say, “but I don’t want that!”
Each one has the choice. One must admit which choice has been made.
Choose to be a pawn, and accept what was heard or
put in the effort to be autonomous.
Here’s a snapshot of groups listed in the 1928 World Almanac - an insight into 90 years ago mentioned in the book for consideration of how the U.S. was organized in 1928.
On a side note, this book was published in 1928. He denotes the, "o" on the word, “cooperation” with an umlaut.
"Coöperation." In Estonian, Finnish and Swedish (there are others too) umlauts are used regularly in words. The pronunciation of ö is as you would pronounce the second o in “cooperation.” Interesting that this spelling has been lost to time in American English. Coöperation. öperate. öurs. The keyboard shortcut for an umlaut above a vowel (on mac) is
alt+u, release, press the letter to umlaut.
