The goal of this playground is to get experience playing with new techniques and methods of
- Network Administration
- Server Administration
- Network and System Monitoring/Security
- Network and System Exploitation
The current equipment I have at my disposal consists of:
- 1x Rack mountable server with 1 TB HDD, 12 GB ram, 12 core CPU
- 1x Rack mountable server with 300 GB HDD, 4 GB ram, 6 core CPU
- 1x 5-port unmanaged tp-link switch
- 1x Netgear WNDR3400v2 home wireless router
- 1x Cisco Catalyst 2950 24-Port switch with no power cable
The plan for now is to get vSphere installed on the bigger server and host a variety of virtual machines.
The smaller server will host a Security Onion or AlienVault instance for monitoring.
The wireless router will allow for various wireless attacks.
I plan to keep an eye open for cheap IoT devices to add to the lab. I will be adding a few Android and Apple devices into the mix eventually. You can expect updates to this set-up, and for future posts to be based off of this lab network.
vSphere is going to cost you a TON of money. A license for the standard edition is $ 995 per CPU. Unless you have money to burn on your you might want to take a look at VMware ESXi.
Lol thank you for clarifying. I wad referring to ESXi, but I was looking at the webpage and saw "vSphere Hypervizor" so my brain decided to just write vSphere lol.
For my purposes, free = better.
