If I said something good, I was down voted by everyone who hated Haejin. If I said something bad, or offered differing analysis than what Haejin was offering, I was down voted by accounts that support Haejin. How is that fair? I was simply being honest and giving my own opinion. If you don't like it, than don't vote for it...but it shouldn't be down voted.I can see both sides of this argument because I've been a victim of both sides when I've commented on things in @haejin posts.
The truth is, I don't understand why there are downvotes at all. If content is bad, people won't read it or upvote it. Why do we need down votes?
On one hand, downvotes just give whales the power to destroy anyone they see as a threat. It basically gives whales a monopoly. They can destroy the competition.
On the other hand, it also gives people who are jealous of others success a way to hurt them simply for making good content. Just because you're successful doesn't mean you should be punished.
I say let the free market decide. Stop allowing people to down vote content. A lack of upvotes should be good enough. Also, if you're worried about people only up-voting themselves, why not cap the amount of upvotes you can give yourself? Why not penalize users who have more than a 60% self upvote? This would incentivize people to upvote others and not just themselves.
I'm fairly new here so I don't pretend to have all the answers. I'm just brainstorming. While I certainly don't like the idea of only a few people having a monopoly on steemit, I also don't like the idea of down voting very successful person simply because you feel they're too successful. There has to be a way to keep it fair without down voting. Just my 2 cents...maybe I'm wrong.
Flagging has uses, some of which are displayed when you do it. I and others think haejin doesn't warrant the rewards he gives himself. We want to see others get a better share
I can understand...and I agree. That's why I suggested maybe changing the rules so someone can only give themselves a certain percentage of upvotes. I just think if you are able to downvote people, this problem will continue. I think the rules on Steemit need to change. Get rid of down voting as well as the ability to upvote yourself more than a certain amount. Maybe make it so no more than 60% of your upvotes can go to yourself. Just a thought.
People would get around this with multiple accounts. It's not simple to fix. I still support keeping flagging as a moderation tool, even though it has been used against me. The community has supported me
I just think down voting gives whales the ability to destroy any competition...but I see your point. You're right, there's not a simple fix.
