Many people believe that washing their body, especially their face, with soap regularly, will keep their skin taut, young, and free of dirt and grime. To a certain extent, they are right but after prolonged use of ordinary soap, the skin begins to show the signs of deterioration. You end up having dry and itchy skin or your skin might develop rashes, pimples and acne. Soap does remove dirt and oil giving us a feeling of freshness after a wash but if we are not aware of the quality of soap we use, it may lead to some serious issues with our skin.
Soaps are made to remove dirt and grime. They can do so due to the presence of surfactants and other chemicals that go into the making of soap. They do some good to our skin getting rid of oil and sweat and they also exfoliate our skin keeping them off blackheads. It becomes easier for us to clean our face with water after application of soap. Soaps also help in removing dead cells.
Surfactants function as detergents, conditioners, foaming agents and emulsifiers. Surfactants are found in soaps, shampoos and other cosmetic products that are used for cleaning our body. However, surfactants have some adverse effects too. The soaps that have surfactants may cause dryness, irritation and redness. It may damage natural protection given by skin so that bacteria can easily penetrate into the skin and cause skin disorders. Soaps can do more harm than good in many cases.
The epidermis of the skin is known as stratum corneum. It is made up of protein cells or keratinocytes which are constantly shed by the skin and new skin cells are formed to replace them. This is a natural process. These keratinocytes reach the outermost layer of the skin where the surfactants are bound to harden them. It causes swelling and itching of skin. The skin loses its natural moisturising quality. The stratum corneum contains fat cells that help the skin retain moisture. The surfactants disrupt this function and make the skin surface permeable to outside harmful agents like microbes and bacteria.
