Smile: It’s great for your health!
Written by Annette Cottingham
I’ve recently read some smile research that broke down our happiness into percentages and some very interesting components. Based on Psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky study, it showed that 50% of happiness stems from our genetics. Surprisingly, only 10% of our happiness stems from our looks, our health, and our finances. That leaves 40% and you know who/what that stems from? That’s right, YOU! Lol, isn’t that awesome! We have more control of our happiness than we are giving ourselves credit for. That’s amazing news and on top of it we are contributing to our good health living as smiling, laughing, happier people. Which our society desperately needs. There are far too many unhappy individuals walking/roaming our Earth. We must address this negativity for it is having the reverse effect on our citizens and there are far more angry, irritable, rude persons living amongst us spreading ugliness, negativity, and poor health habits. I have started my mission to help more individuals smile in the world years ago. Of course, I smile as often as I possibly can, and I help as well as promote others to do the same whether that be in person, via email, telephone, facebook etc. In fact, I’ve created a page just so a person can have a place to go and smile despite all life throws at them. It’s titled: Smile Anyways! And you what? It works! So much so that I did tons more of smile research and I want to share it with as many people as i can, as it was shared with me. I take a very strong liking to smiling, here are the reasons why: Enjoy! This list was compiled by Natives unlisted.
REASONS EVERYONE IN THE WORLD SHOULD SMILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First, Psychologists have found in studies that even if a person is not in their best mood, they can still instantly lift their spirits by forcing themselves to smile.
Second, Smiling has the power to boost your immune system! Smiling doesn't just improve your immune system, it improves your physical health overall. Studies show that a person’s body is more relaxed when they smile, which contributes to better health and a stronger immune system.
Third: Smiling is contagious! Seriously, and scientists agree. In fact, some did a study which was conducted in Sweden where individuals had difficulty frowning while they were looking at other subjects that were smiling. Scientists said their muscles twitched into smiles all by themselves.
Fourth: Smiling relieves stress. A person’s body immediately releases endorphins when they smile, whether it’s forced or not. Smiling suddenly changes a person’s mood and will help them feel better as well as release stress.
Fifth: It’s much easier to smile than frown. Scientists have revealed that a human's body has to work harder and use more muscles to frown than it does by simply smiling.
Sixth: Smiling is a universal sign of happiness. Smiling is known around the world and recognized in many cultures as a sign of happiness, acceptance, and gratitude.
Seventh: Smiling is a MUST at work. Research states that 30% of people smile 5 to 20 more times a day while working.
Eighth: A smile can use anywhere from 5 to 53 facial muscles. Simply smiling can require your body to use up to 53 muscles, however, sometimes a smile will only use 5.
Ninth: Babies are born smiling! Mostly learned behavior, still scientists believe that all babies are born with the ability to smile, seeing as though, blind babies are able to smile as well.
Tenth: Smiling helps you get further in life. Smiling causes for a person to appear more attractive, confident, kind, and sociable, and these types of individuals are more likely to get promoted in many instances.
Eleventh: A smile is the most easily recognizable facial expression known to man. A person recognize a smile from 300 feet away, which makes it the most recognizable facial expression.
Twelfth: Women smile more often than men. Currently. Women generally smile more than men and this stems back to birth. Baby boy’s smile less than baby girls do at birth.
Thirteen: Smiling has proven to be more attractive than makeup. A company named Orbit completed a research study that discovered a whomping 69% of people found women more attractive when they simply and naturally smile versus when they smile wearing makeup.
Fourteen:There are so many different ways to smile. A UC-San Francisco researcher put the many smiles into two major categories: 1) the polite social smile, 2)the sincere “felt” smile that uses more muscles in the face.
Fifteen: Babies start smiling as a newborn. Doctors believe the real smiling occurs between ages 4-6 weeks, however, babies start smiling in their sleep as soon as they’re born.
I truly hopes the reasons listed above will be a great start towards your smiling journey. Smiling is a very important part of our lives, in some ways to be considered a skill. Research has shown that there are a number of health benefits which are to be contributed to smiling, laughing, and overall enjoying yourself. As children, many of us smile, however somewhere along the transition from adolescent to adult smiles seem to fade. This needs to be addressed nationwide. The time has come for us to be in more control of our happiness regardless of the adversities we continue to face. Smiling doesn’t cost any of us a penny, however, it surely will bring a pretty penny your way someday. Have at it! We only have one life to live, let’s make the most of it, happily!
