Happiness is a combined state of mind, body and spirit. Every now and then I find somebody asking the same question over and over again "How to be happy" and all I want to say is "only you know the answer as happiness is very personal thing." People tend to see happiness as something external like some materialistic object only a few understand that happiness lies with in.
I don't know about others but so far here's what I have discovered about happiness
- Happiness is internal and acceptance is the key to it, without acceptance we only end up comparing, criticising and rejecting every opportunity given to us. No acceptance means no happiness it's simple as that.
- Adaptation plays the same role when it comes to leading a happy life as we buy a new mobile device or a new car, we adapt or we end up with a very expensive piece of junk. We need to adapt to the new situations and then we adapt again.
- Keeping a safe distance from the things(or people) that are not helping to cope with the current situation is only wise and contributes to peace of mind and ultimately to the happiness as everything that is not helping is a distraction.
- It's okay to do things that nobody else is doing, things that makes you happy anyway, things like waking up early sometimes and going out for a walk, taking care of your garden/lawn, cooking out of nowhere, taking a break just to distract yourself when everybody else is too busy with their own delegations.
- Understanding the magical powers of little things, sometimes drinking a glass of water makes you more happy than drinking a whole bottle of finest wine.
- Chores can be therapeutic, I often find myself bickering with my own mind about washing dishes(this is the one thing I actualy hate doing) but once I see no escape and start washing them, there is this new door of conscious bliss opens on me. As soon as I am done washing the first plate, I end up washing them all and once I am through washing all of them I feel so good about myself, which is far better than procrastinating sitting on a couch.
- Interacting with surrounings without the help of technology or "Apps", don't get me wrong I am a hardcore nerd and proud of it but there is this thing with human species as the world is moving toward more focused and optimum lifestyle we crave the good old crudness(not to be confused with mess) in almost every aspect of existence, don't believe me?Ask any mountaineer why he enjoy climbing or a dirt biker, why he love it? They will all tell you just one thing because it all feels just right.
Nice post! I love your example of embracing washing the dishes mindfully. Thich Nhat Hanh says that we should be "washing the dishes to wash the dishes". It's only unpleasant when we are washing the dishes so that we can do something else.
But when we wash the dishes mindfully, closely paying attention to the sensations and sounds, it can be an enjoyable experience. It's a good example of how changing your mindset can alleviate suffering.
I'm glad that you liked my first post, thanks :)
