I like your point about using food choices to strengthen communities. Food is so often a very community oriented part of life, but usually only in making/eating it. It's easy to forget about the source.
Detroit (where I am from) has a really rich history of local farmers' markets and has seen somewhat of a boom the last few years of community gardens popping up all over. It's pretty great to see.
