Meskel Festival; Intangible Heritages of Ethiopia Inscribed by UNESCO

Meskel is one of the most known and big religious festival celebrated by the Ethiopian Christian annually on 26th of September. The word “meskel” in Amharic language refers to “Cross”. Therefore, Meskel festival marks founding of true cross upon which Jesus was crucified but hidden after the crusification of Christ Jesus.

during the festivity of Meskel, hundreds of thousands of people will gather in a place called Meskel square to celebrate in a most attractive and colorful ways.

During the celebration, the Christian community engages in various activities such as prayer, spiritual songs, cultural and dancing believing to receive blessings from God and spiritual rewards from the celebration

One of the unique and overwhelming features of Meskel festival is the ceremony of firing a large bonfire, which locally known as Demera. Historically, it was told the smoke from a bonfire has shown Queen Elen; the Roman empress who found the cross where the place the true cross was buried
