First of all I want to wish everyone a very happy new year!
Let's start the new year with our latest trip in 2021; a city trip to the beautiful Belgian city Ghent.
I've visited multiple Belgian cities, but Ghent is the most impressive one. I really fell in love with this city and this visit was certainly not my last...
We parked our car just outside the city center. A five minute walk took us over the cobble stone covered Sint-Michielsbrug. It was then that I already knew I was going to like this city. Just look at the view!
The city really takes you back to the middle ages. And it's not only the buildings, but also the decorations like this one of Saint George and the Dragon in a lamp post on the bridge.
These decorations on top of a former mason's house should have been able to rotate, but they were to heavy. Now the building is a Taco restaurant.
The dragon is the symbol of the city. It stands for power and independence. The story goes that the Norwegian king Sigurd Magnusson had this golden dragon on the prow on his ship in 1111.
He donated the statue to the emperor of Constantinopel (now Istanbul) who placed it on the Aya Sofia temple.
About 100 years later it was count Boudewijn IX who brought it to Belgium where the people from Ghent placed it on top of their Bell tower.
This is the Bell Tower from the other side.
In the city of Ghent two rivers converge; the Schelde and the Leie. The houses on the quay are so beautiful.
Just look at the decorations on the rooftop!
This is a view from the other side.
Here's a view from the Sint-Michiels bridge with the Sint-Michiels church in the background.
Even the pillars of the bridge are richly decorated.
And just look a the the carving above this door.
As if it isn't enough yet the city also has it's own fortress; Gravensteen.
It dates from 837.
It's a real tourist attraction.
This statue of Neptune is on top of the former fish market building.
And just some more beautiful facades.

You woudn't have guessed it, but this building is a police office.
And there are more building that have a new function. Like this former post office which now houses a clothes shop and a supermarket.
The houses actually stand in the water of the Leie river.
The last photo is one of the statue of emperor Jacob Van Artevelde (1290-1345) which is called 'the most famous man of Ghent'. He was a rebel leader during the Hundred Years' War with France.

I really the style of the city. I don't know if it is popular in Europe, but we don't have that in Vietnam. It looks vintage and classical.
