There are many foods that qualify as super-foods, but we’re going to focus exclusively on seeds for this article.
Seeds are rich in healthy fats, fibre, and protein. The popularity of seeds, however, has led to an influx of misinformation. We’re breaking down the best seeds for you and what’s good about them so you can confidently eat the most powerful seeds.
Hemp Seeds
Hemp seeds have the most protein out of all the seeds available to eat. They make source of protein for vegetarians or a great alternative to eating meat if you’re just trying to cut back. You can eat them as they are or blend them into smoothies.
They also contain most of the Vitamin E recommended daily and a third of the recommended amount of zinc. It takes longer to digest hemp seeds than carbs, keeping you fuller for a longer period of time. They’ll help to boost your immune system, too.
It’s important to note that, even though hemp is a type of cannabis, it will not have any of the effects of marijuana.
Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are a delicious and highly versatile super-food. They contain fourteen grams of healthy fats per ounce, ten grams of protein, and over half of your recommended daily dose of copper, phosphorus, magnesium, among other essential minerals. They have almost as much zinc as hemp seeds are good for prostate health.
Chia Seeds
Chia seeds contain five grams of protein, ten grams of fibre, and are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and phosphorous. These powerful little seeds can absorb up to ten times their weight in water, making them easy to sneak into your meals without much notice.
The one downside to chia seeds is that they cost quite a bit more than other seeds. There are rumours that chia seeds can lower blood pressure and facilitate weight loss, but neither has been proven.
Flax Seeds
Flax seeds are one of the most popular types of seeds and super-foods. Flax contains over 25% of your recommended daily dose of magnesium, eight grams of fibre, and twelve grams of fatty acids. The large amount of fibre packed into flax helps to maintain healthy digestion. Flax has also been known to lower both cholesterol and high blood pressure. It should be noted that ground flax seeds and flax seed oil should be kept in the fridge to maintain their freshness. Flax seeds are best consumed in ground form, allowing you to get all the nutrients out of the shell.
Benefits to including more seeds in your diet
As we said before, these seeds are super-foods, packed to the brim with nutrients to improve your overall health. If you’re a vegetarian or just looking to reduce the amount of meat you consume regularly, these seeds can help provide you with a convenient and versatile alternative protein source.
Because so many of these seeds like chia, flax, and hemp can be easily mixed into foods like smoothies or pudding, they make it easy to sneak your needed nutrients into your diet undetected.
Super-foods are a great way to get in all the nutrients your body needs through one power packed food. Through this article, we focused on the seeds that qualify as super-foods to try to minimize the misinformation surrounding them and help you find the best seeds to boost your overall health.
There are many benefits to integrating these seeds into your regular diet and little to no downside; what are you waiting for?
