Excess vitamin C instead of healthy even bad for health. One that must be observed is the risk of kidney stones.
"The cause of kidney stones can also be due to most vitamin C," said Rachel Olsen, a nutrition specialist from Youvit for Life, told Healthcare Liputan6.com when heading to SCTV Tower on Tuesday, May 22, 2018.
According to Rachel, our body is only able to absorb vitamin C by 90 milligrams. When more than 2,000 milligrams, vitamin C that enters the body is processed as calcium oxalate, which when combined with other minerals can become crystals, and leads to kidney stones.
"I've had patients in the morning and evening always drinking vitamin C. He thinks, the more the better, when he checks, he gets the kidney stones," Rachel said.
Therefore, Rachel who took nutrition education in Copenhagen, Denmark, suggested, to diligently see the amount of vitamin C from the supplements that we will drink.
Because, without us knowing it, the body has been getting intake of vitamin C from the food we eat everyday. And supplements serve as a complement to vitamin needs.
"Vitamin C is found in fruits and vegetables, if we eat enough fruits and vegetables everyday, like papayas, oranges, guava, vitamins are enough (but actually), but (what fruit and vegetables) does it process?" he said.
