Urinary tract infection (UTI) can be caused by many things. Starting from the consequences of diabetes, kidney stones, until just because too long delaying urination.
Fortunately, one new study found an easy way to prevent urinary tract infections: drink more water.
Previously, doctors have suggested this to patients who often have UTI. But now there is data that supports it, says Thomas Hooton, MD, of the University of Miami School of Medicine.
"It's so good to know that our recommendations are valid, and drinking more water is a simple and safe way to prevent these annoying and painful infections," he said, launching Prevention on Monday (21/05/2018).
This result was obtained after testing 140 perimenopausal women who had at least three UTIs in the past year. They also reported drinking less water.
Then, half the women were asked to drink 1.5 liters of water every day for one year. Meanwhile half of them were not asked to change their drinking patterns.
At the end of the study period, those who drank more water, the infection fell by 48 percent.
