Food poisoning is caused when a contaminated food is eaten. The contaminant include bacteria, fungi, toxins, parasite like house fly, viruses. Contamination can occur an point of processing. Contamination can also occur in the house when the food is not well prepared.
CAUSES
There are a host of microorganisms that can cause food poisoning. The most common culprits are Entamoeba (a common parasite that can cause dysentery), Giardia (another parasite that causes diarrhea),Listeria, Shigella, Salmonella (bacteria that causes typhoid), E coli,Campylobacter and Norovirus.
All of the above are contacted through the food substance which includes vegetable, cereals, legumes, tuber etc
SYMPTOMS
These include; diarrhoea, fever, dysentry, abdominal pain, body ache, vomiting.
Even though most cases of food poisoning settle in a period of 5-7 days, they can persist and worsen with potentially life-threatening consequences in those who are young, elderly, or with a low immune status (such as pregnant women and those with HIV infection).
CURE/TREATMENT
it’s crucial to remain properly hydrated for a person suffering from food poisoning. Sports drinks high in electrolytes can be helpful with this. Fruit juice and coconut water can restore carbohydrates and help with fatigue.
In children, Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), which is available in most drug stores and Primary Health Care Centers(PHC), is a very important step in the treatment.
Note: If the symptoms is getting worse. I advise you should pay a visit to the doctor.
