How Caffeine Affects Your Body and Brain

in #health7 years ago

Coffee, tea and cola are just three substances that many of us take to get our daily dose of caffeine. But what exactly happens in our brain and in our body when we take this colorless, odorless and insipid drug?

From our bloodstream to the brain, caffeine affects multiple areas of our body in different ways, although not everything is negative: it can also improve our mood, focus and reduce appetite.

But, here we leave what it produces in your body, and other curious data.

  • Most healthy adults consume about 400 milligrams of caffeine each day. A can of Red Bull contains 80 milligrams of this substance.
  • Caffeine can improve your memory, and is more effective in this aspect if you do not consume it daily.
  • This substance blocks molecules in our brain, called adenosines, which causes us to fall asleep. With this, caffeine favors the production of two natural stimulants: dopamine and glutamine, which increases your mood and even reduces the risk of depression.
  • Caffeine can improve your ability to focus, as long as it is in moderate doses. A dose higher than the recommended dose can damage your eyesight, due to nervousness.
  • Also, it can increase the acid levels of your stomach.
  • Some studies claim that caffeine temporarily reduces appetite.
  • When we ingest it, caffeine is absorbed by the stomach; After an hour or two, it enters the bloodstream. It takes about five to six hours for the body to completely eliminate it.
  • A moderate dose may increase blood pressure, but not enough to cause any damage in adults.
  • Caffeine alerts the brain to activate the adrenal glands (in the kidneys) and fill the body with adrenaline, which makes you more irritable and mood swings.
