Yesterday I wrote a blog about my exams for the first responder team and I want to talk about something that is not spoken of often but is very needed to know.

There are wishes you have to respect. Wishes from people you don’t know regarding to saving their life. As a first responder you can come to a scene with a patient that doesn’t want to be saved. The reason can differ. Can be confrontational but a wish is a command in this situation.

There was a part in the course and the exam to prepare us. You can be confronted with a patient with a medal.

The non-resuscitation medal is a treatment prohibition regarding resuscitation. A self-contained statement, worn on a necklace, and provided with a passport photo, signature, name and date of birth.

Given the poor chances of survival at old age or when already ill, more and more elderly people in the Netherlands do not want to be resuscitated if they were to suffer cardiac arrest. The NVVE developed the non-resuscitation medal for these people in 2007. The medal is legally recognized and prohibits any form of resuscitation. The medal is provided with a photo, date of birth and signature and must be worn around the neck so that it is immediately visible during resuscitation.

A tattoo with the text indicating that the person wearing it does not want to be resuscitated is legally valid according to Minister of Health. The minister responded to questions from the House of Representatives, following the reports about a 91-year-old woman from The Hague. She had the text "Non-CPR !!!" tattooed on her chest. That was the reason laws been changed. You can’t go on information by the family. It has to be a tattoo. Cause families might be happy to get rid of the nasty mum of nasty father in law.

So in the Netherlands the Non-CPR tattoo is legally valid. The minister emphasized that every person always has the right to refuse medical assistance and therefore also CPR. For us students it was weird to learn to always be quick and start saving a life and now we will be standing next to a person and watch them die. But law is law. But it’s not yet a national accepted thing so the tattoos and medals will be an exception rather than a thing you see a lot. But awareness people AWARENESS

QUESTION ARISING : DO YOU ALWAYS RESUSCITATE?

Well the answer was Y E S , if you want to! W T F ... If I want to? So, i have to decide?! No, I hope I never have to use all this new knowledge but if I am in a situation where I See someone in need , I have to act immidiately and won’t ask questions : I JUST DO IT!

I dont want to but there is a need for speed and knowledge so lets take charge. When you start your procedure and find a tattoo like the ones above, you are allowed to stop! But can you handle the fact that eventhough you have the knowledge, and see the written wish, someone died under your care and hands? You have to live on. Maybe My religion says I can’t obey the order tattoo.

That one I didn’t see coming. Thats a question about life and dead. I dont want to answer that one! I just want to do my civil duty. Well the teacher told us : You start up the RESUSCITATION and wait for the paramedics and they have the authority to make that call. They are used to these situations. There are neckleses to with this NR wish but often When someones down on the ground the badge is not in sight or under the body that way its most likely that you also already started the CPR before finding out this last wish pendant of the injured person.

It got me thinking about it ll again, and I even dreamed about it! What will i do , what would you do? I want to save you, or another life but if you don’t want me too, I have to respect that but also have to live with the fact I let someone die under My hands, eventhough I had the knowledge to save. Well that was also in my blog ftom last year and I still feel the same. It’s good the think about it and tell what you feel about that. Let’s hope I never have to make that decision, just save a life!

I definitely think I would do the resuscitation. That tattoo could have done it under certain conditions of depression or some inconvenience that he could not handle.
We must resuscitate him and then we asked him if what the tattoo said was a wish that was updated or not. lol

Thats the way i will go aswell thank you for you reply and i hope i wont need it :(

I do not know of a medical necklace like this in America but there is a DNR (do not resuscitate) order in hospitals.

I know we have that in the Netherlands before an operation. But this is also in cases on the street when people are unconscious

I can not see how a dnr would be valid outside of a hospital but I believe in free will. Who am I to prolong a life that does not want to continue. It is sad and I feel a wasted experience but freewill is freewill. Even God doesn't mess with that.

Yes thank god for free will but its difficult when you encounter it

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

Wow. I had never thought about this until my father td us not to recesitate him. It has made have to think hard about how i would feel. I am not sure i could. You are such a strong woman.

I committed but this is a serious choice so i will start my lessons and let the paramedics make the decisions

That was a real eye-opener!!

This was an option I never thought of but I am all in and will do my job untill the paramedics arrive
Thanks friend

I know about DNR in the U.S. I also know that individuals also utilize a living will and advance medical directives in which they make their wishes known. As far as weaaring some type of necklace or tatoo, don't know if that would be reliable or not to indicate someone's choice.

I have been given several directives personally, but I always have urged family members to put it in writing so it won't just be my word against others' wishes. Of course, they never get around to it.

Thanks for sharing.
