Very full answer to a very real problem! Great post @braini! From working with my yoga students I can add that "holding on" to emotions is one of the main causes of shoulder pain. "Storing" the stress you are not ready to let go in upper back area is very common. You can work on it from both ends: releasing physical tension from muscles by stretches and movements to let go of emotions, and addressing the emotional baggage directly to free the physical body from it's grasp. It takes work, but is it very possible to be pain-free for most of us.
