A lot of runners often suffer blisters during or after the race. Blisters result from prolonged friction against the foot. Anything which intensifies rubbing can be the root cause of a blister, for instance, poorly fitting-running shoes, wet feet, running faster and longer, and the like.
Although blisters do not cause serious health problems for you (minor ailments) and you might only feel localized pain and burning sensations, they can easily get infected and may lead to another trouble when you try to pop a blister without sterilizing a needle with alcohol. And when blisters are infected, they fill with pus.
Before blisters ruin your run, not to scare you too much, below is a list of what you bear in mind before your running.
- Pick the right socks to minimize friction against the feet.
- Purchase the right running shoes that best fit for you.
- Try Vaseline or creams to keep friction to a minimum.
What should I do when a blister pops up although I have tried my best not to get it? Simply leave it intact if you have got a small blister.
However, if you are looking to pop and drain the blister safely on your own, please see below and follow these steps.
- Wash your hands.
- Sterilize a needle with alcohol.
- Puncture the blisters, spots close to the blister's edge.
- Apply antibiotic ointment and cover the blisters with a fresh bandage to keep bacteria from getting in.
- Keep the area clean and apply antibiotic ointment again until healed.
