In recent years, Alcohol and Drug consumption has greatly increased, as the Hard drinking and drug using generation who where teens in the 70's and 80's, have continued or restarted their habits, as they become empty nestors. Further the children of this generation have followed the example set by their parents, and are proving to be another high drug and alcohol using group.
Of course for those who have low or moderate consumption, it is hard to imagine the devastation that daily drug and/or alcohol use can cause. Physical and mental illness percentages, are greatly increased in those who abuse substances.
Dry October has become a popular pastime, for those who use Alcohol and other Drugs, to prove they are not addicted by abstaining for the month. They can be sponsored as fundraisers, and many people donate the money they would normally spend on Alcohol or Drugs to recovery services and programs, to help those who suffer from Addictions.

Many people do not realize how addictive these substances really are, until they try to stop the usage for a set period. I see here on Steemit, that Marijuana use is popularized and promoted as harmless, this is both laughable and distressing, for those who have worked in Mental health services.
Those who cannot see themselves as addicted, can often point the finger at a family member or friend, and say that "i am not as bad as they are." It is often hard to see the predicament that we ourselves are in, and this period of abstaining in Dry October can show us if we really have a problem and surprisingly cannot stop, even when we have set ourselves the target of a month sober.
I have no issue with those who use Alcohol and other Drugs, and have had my time enjoying them too, however, addiction is cancer in today's society. Dry October is a fun way to share a period of sobriety with the wider community, we can set ourselves, friends and family the challenge of raising money for charity, through sponsoring the month.
I myself will not be using any Substances during October, including all drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.
