Percentile -the growth curve- is a tool used to compare your child’s measurements like height, weight, head circumference with other children at the same age, sex and ethnicity. It is used by physicians to track your child's growth.
To make weight percentile sheets, weight measurements of 100 healthy children of the same age, sex and ethnicity are recorded and sorted from lowest to highest. The 25th child is the limit of 25th percentile, 50th child is 50th percentile and so on. If your physician told you that your child is on the 50th percentile, she/he is on the average value of all. If on 90th percentile, then she/he is fatter than other 89 children and thinner than 10 children.
Generally it is okay for your child to be in between 10th and 90th percentiles. It’s not correct to compare the measurements of your child with others. For example, one can be 25th percentile, and another can be 75th percentile, but they all are in normal range, so both individuals can be considered healthy. The important thing is following your child’s growth in recurrent examinations and see if she/he can keep his percentile. It’s more alarming dropping from 90th percentile to 10th percentile than always be on 10th percentile.
Therefore, it is very important to take your child to your pediatrician regularly, even if they are healthy.
