An Overview Of Bayelsa State Insurance Scheme(BHIS).

Bayelsa State health insurance scheme is a social security programme designed by the state Government where health services of enrolled are paid from the common pool of funds contributed by participants in the scheme. Contributions are deducted from public servants which 2% of their gross monthly earnings, it starts with people in the state's public service. The introduction of Bayelsa health insurance scheme(BHIS) is to carter for as many that will fall sick in the cause of their service year. Another purpose of BHIS is cross subsidization where the health subsidize for the ill, the young subsidize for the old, the higher income group subsidize for the lower income group. This is a method of redistribution of income to meet the health care needs of the he workers in the state.

This scheme went further to cover spouse and four biological children of the couple between the age of 18 years. Private sector participation is through the employer, who shall share the premium payable for the scheme in such a manner as with from time to time be prescribed by the scheme. All those who contributed to the scheme, in addition to a spouse and four biological children below the he age of 18 years. Each eligible family is allowed a maximum of 6 beneficiaries as stipulated above.

Services Provided By The BHIS.

  1. Out care patient, including necessary consumables.

  2. Pharmaceutical care as contained in the BHIS drug list.

  3. Diagnostic test as contained into the BHIS diagnostic test list.

  4. Maternity(antenatal, delivery and post natal care for four pregnancies ending in love birth).

  5. All live north eligible to cover will be covered during the post natal period of twelve weeks from the date of delivery.

  6. All preterm/permature babies eligible to cover shall be covered for twelve weeks from the date of delivery.

  7. Consultation with specialist in the various fields of medicine.

  8. Hospital care in the standard ward for a stay limited to cumulative 3o days per year.

  9. Eye examination and care, the provision of low priced glasses but excluding contact lenses.

  10. Dental care.

  11. A range of prosthesis(illness to prosthesis produced in Nigeria).

  12. Annual medical check-up unrelated to illness

  13. Preventive care including immunization, health, family plans being education.
