Essential oils: What they are and why you should use them

Essential oils have many benefits and usages. I personally use an oil diffuser in my office every day and have a small selection of different oils (sometimes I just use aromas which would be the same as using incense. No health benefits other than having a pleasant smell to help you lift your spirits and maybe relax) in order to create a better work ambience.
Not all oils are the same or used in the same way, so before you start to use them here is a quick lesson:

Essential oils: What are they?

Essential oils are very concentrated extracts that can come from flowers, fruits, barks, seeds or even roots. And what do they do? They help us balance our skin in the form of hydration, protection, flexibility and even luminosity. They also have an anti-aging behavior, since they fine-tune and soften fine lines. There are many other benefits depending on the extract which you can read further down.

How are essential oils used?

The simplest way iss through aromatherapy. You just have to smell them! On the other hand, its application through the skin is also simple, although we must take certain precautions since these are very concentrated substances. That is why essential oils must always be used diluted in conductive substances, such as vegetable oils or clays. Only the essential oils of lavender, chamomile and tea tree can be applied directly on the skin. Regarding its oral use, the quantities will depend on each person.

Face: essential oils, real skin resuscitators, block certain processes of degradation of cells. A daily massage, before the application of the care cream, promotes cellular renewal and restores radiance and flexibility to the skin. With 5 drops you will have more than enough.

Body: the essential oils are massaged on certain parts of the body to treat precise problems, stimulate the microcirculation and facilitate the loss of water (cellulite, heavy legs), or on the whole silhouette to improve the elasticity and firmness of the skin.

Hair: the use of essential oils, soothing and stimulating, activates the microcirculation, relaxes the scalp and restores tone and hydration to the hair.

Benefits from the different types of oils:

Essential oils have the specific properties of the plants from which they are obtained. In general, they are, to a greater or lesser extent:

  • Antibiotics
  • Anti-inflammatories
  • Antiseptics
  • Cell regenerators
  • Antivirals
  • Relaxing
  • Toning
  • Anti-radicals
  • They activate the blood and lymphatic circulation.

Hi, do you have scientific articles to share for the research that you did about essential oils? I am interested in particular for support of this long list of reported benefits. I am uninterested in information provided by a company that sells these products, unless it is peer-reviewed research. Thanks!

Good oil info

Thanks for the overview. After trying a few I've stuck with lavender for sleep aid, caraway for a good atmosphere, and lemon & orange for soaps! Eucalyptus is also nice for the steam room :-D

great oils to have.

Great post @emancipatedhuman.
I love talking about essential oils since I've been using them for more than a year and I see great results.
It's so great to see more people talking about it.

Awesome post! Very informative! I've trying to implement more essential oils in my daily life because I love the benefits of using them. As of right now I only use lavender, peppermint and orange. In the near future I plan on using essential oils on wool balls in place of fabric softener sheets in the dryer. So far lavender is definitely my favorite...it relaxes me and helps me sleep so much better. I hope more people begin to realize the natural benefits that essential oils can provide.

Good info. Lucky me I found your blog by accident. I really like it when folks get together and share thoughts. Finally I've found something that helped me. Thanks @emancipatedhuman!

Every one is here is interested to know how essential oils will help their body and what is the best way to use oils on face and other part of body.
Here i describe the proper way of using of essential oil on face:

  1. Open pores by rinsing your face with warm water.
  2. With upward rotations, massage oil mixture all over face for 1–2 minutes.
  3. Leave mixture on face for 1 minute.
  4. Saturate a clean washcloth with warm water.
  5. Place towel on face and leave for 15–30 seconds.
  6. Slowly and gently wipe off oil.
  7. Repeat steps 5–7 until your face feels clean.

I have heard a lot about essential oils and this post helped me educate myself further! Thank you!
