Everybody likes a pretty smile and a clean, healthy mouth, but how to go about it can be different for every person!
What I prefer is to stay away from mainstream toothpastes full of chemicals that I don't trust, made from companies that don't actually have my best interest at heart.
So, a few years ago the Yeti and I switched to all natural toothpaste which worked out really well until we moved away from the city and the price of the toothpaste felt like it sky rocketed!
So, one day after we ran out, and the thought of buying more made me cringe, I looked at a couple of ingredients we had on hand that were good for oral health and knew I had a solution.
Baking Soda and Coconut Oil
Now, the taste won't leave you with fresh minty breath unless you add peppermint oil, but if you do, I recommend a brand like Young Living or DoTerra. As far as I know, they are the only essentials safe to digest.
We have used peppermint and liked it, but we have also used thieves oil for it's antibacterial and antifungal properties. Unfortunately, we ran out of that ages ago!
Then, while visiting @thefarmerswife, she gifted us some tea tree oil and I was so grateful!
I knew I wanted to add it to our toothpaste as soon as we got home, and after using it only once, our teeth were brighter and cleaner than ever!
Here's a look at the process!
I start by adding about a cup of baking soda.
Next, I put a couple dollops of extra virgin coconut oil.
Then, I pour a two or three tablespoons of water.
Lastly, I add ten or so drops of tea tree oil!
Scrub, scrub, scrub!
Like always...
I love our toothpaste (its Melaleuca brand - the cinnamon flavor) i love love love it so much that i'm like mmmmmmmm when i brush my teeth LOL
but i forgot to order, and i didn't realize that it was the last in the cupboard. I am gonna try this today!!!!!
i'll let you know heheheh
Oh no! Running out is the worst! But...I'm glad it gives you a chance to try this! Hahaha
What a great idea - saves money and no nasty chemicals - when I run out i may give this a go :) Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! You can also play around with adding hydrogen peroxide and salt for stains!
Back to nature!!!
The steps are easy. It didn't take times. I'll try this natural toothpaste at home. Thank you @freedomtowrite❤️
Yes! Great, I'm glad it was helpful!
Simple and easy...I have some something similar in a pinch before and it turned out fine!
Nice! It's great to have something on hand!
I realize that I omitted the word "made" in my comment. Basically if I forget to get some I have been able to make some until I could get some more bought.
Haha I understood!

Oh my goodness, thank you so much! I will go look!
This is easy peasy! I'll be making this when mine runs out! Thanks for posting this!
Oh, I'm so glad! I was just thinking about you earlier! How are things going? (I feel like that might be a loaded question bigger than a comment section can hold.)
I am in the middle of gathering my thoughts in a post. I hope I can get it out today...
Yeah, absolutely. I'll keep an eye out for it.
I love the gif!
I used to make our toothpaste too and the base was coconut oil. Then I read that the coconut oil is really bad for drains and city pipes. We had it start to build up in our drain pipe because we weren't running a lot of hot water through our sink. But even then, if you're in the city you might be able to run enough water to clear it from your own pipes but because the oil solidifies it can build up before fully washing away. Once we learned that we started spitting either outdoors or in our composting toilet. -Aimee
Haha that would cause trouble! I'll keep that in mind on our bus if we're in the north...I don't want to clog up our drains!
This is great! May I link this article and feature your username @freedomtowrite in the next issue of the Weekly Homesteading Newsletter? It would be perfect for the DIY section! Let me know, thanks!
Wow! Yes, absolutely! I'm so glad you liked it! I will go check out the newsletter, thank you!
