First you have sensations, like the eye sees something you like, or the nose smells something you don't like.... you react with like, dislike, or don't really care, a thought comes up, you take action, this takes 1/64 of a second...If you can be mindful of physical sensation you can watch habits coming and going without taking action. This takes strong determination, right effort. Eventually the negative habits and mind states will fade away and it is easier to see sensation as just sensation, establishing positive habits and mind states when the mind is clear and stable.
